When “home safety” means more than grab bars and handrails. ❤️

One of my favorite parts of occupational therapy is looking at the whole picture—the person, their abilities, their environment, and the little adaptations that can make everyday life safer and more manageable.

This is my grandmother’s medication dispenser. As her dementia progressed, taking the right medication at the right time became a safety concern.

Instead of taking the task away from her, I adapted the dispenser to help her continue doing it herself:

💊 “TURN UPSIDE DOWN” — a visual reminder of what to do.

🖐️ The hand sticker — showing her exactly where to place her hand because she wouldn’t remember.

Two tiny modifications. One very intentional goal: help her stay safe and independent.

That’s what a Home Safety & Accessibility Evaluation is about—looking beyond obvious safety concerns and finding practical ways to adapt the environment to the person.

Home safety evaluations can address:

🏡 Fall risks & mobility
🧠 Cognitive changes & dementia
💊 Medication management
🚿 Bathroom safety & adaptive equipment
🍽️ Kitchen safety
👕 Dressing, bathing & self-care
🦯 Equipment & accessibility needs
🔑 Visual cues & environmental modifications
❤️ Caregiver support & reducing daily stress

My grandmother was able to safely remain in her own home until she was 90. She now lives in a dementia care home, but my experience helping her navigate dementia has deeply shaped the way I approach this work.

Sometimes the solution is a major modification and sometimes it’s a sticker hand. 🖐️

Let them get messy. 🤎

There is so much more happening in a mud kitchen than just making a mess.

When children pour, scoop, stir, squeeze, splash, and create, they’re building skills through play—fine motor coordination, hand strength, bilateral coordination, sensory processing, motor planning, problem-solving, communication, creativity, and independence.

But just as importantly… they’re being kids.

They’re exploring without worrying about getting dirty. They’re making their own choices. They’re experimenting, imagining, and learning that it’s okay when things don’t turn out exactly as planned.

As parents, we don’t have to turn every moment into a learning activity. Sometimes the best thing we can do is step back, say “go for it,” and let them explore.

Because play isn’t just play.
Play is how children learn, grow, regulate, connect, and discover who they are.

✨ Hi, I’m Dr Elizabeth Voigt! ✨
I am an occupational therapist, a wife, a mom, and the heart behind Elizabeth Voigt Therapy — a private OT practice rooted in compassion, connection, and faith.

For the past decade I have supported individuals and families across the lifespan — from newborn to older adults — navigating challenges with development, parenting or caregiving, independence, and everyday lifeskills despite injuries or diagnosis. My approach is person-centered, strengths-based, and guided by the belief that each person is created with purpose and dignity.

Whether I’m helping a child build emotional regulation skills, coaching parents through hard seasons, or supporting adults in maintaining safety and independence at home — my work is grounded in evidence-based practice and the gentle truth of God’s love.

If you’re looking for support, encouragement, or practical tools for everyday life, I’d love to walk alongside you, and I’m glad youre here. 🖤
