in the disney classic, jiminy cricket represents the conscience- our inner sense of 'right and wrong' as he tried to steer the naive pinocchio into behaving.

while no sanscrit term exactly correlates, the concept is not unfamiliar to yoga. 'viveka-buddhi' comes close. viveka refers to our ability to discern good from bad and buddhi is our intellect or understanding.

also, 'anthakarana' is the school playground of our mind, intellect and ego- where internal feelings wrestle with moral values.

'manassaksin' translates literally to the 'witness of the mind', where we observe our own thoughts and choices.

the study and practice of yoga is not just for the flexibility of the body, but the gradual quieting that leads to the understanding of why we suffer, and a method to peace.

they say that once you set foot upon the path, you will find it everywhere. in this scene from disney's pinoccho, the turquoise fairy bestows life to a wooden puppet. it's a two-edged sword.

although it's difficult to remember sometimes, we live in a glorious world surrounded by infinite beauty and light. we wish for a peaceful moon day today for all yogis and yoginis whether at home or abroad.

how's that new years resolution going? statistically, almost all quick change makeovers don't survive the first missed opportunity. that's because it isn't because we're weak but because we're creatures of habit. habit (patterns) are what our minds love.

so to change a habit, we must change the mind, and not temporarily, but for good. centuries ago the skill of meditation was developed exactly for this purpose- to quiet the jumping of the mind.

you needn't travel to india, or buy a zazen cushion or pay someone for a mantra. meditation is a practice of centering your thoughts upon one seed. i kinda like using the breath... it's free and convenient.

it's not that we shouldn't wish to change things up a bit around new years- most sentient beings are (at least) closet-dwelling critics and believe anyone, including themselves, might benefit from some tucking in.

but, trying to modify our behaviors alone focuses on the symptoms and fails to address the real culprit- our thinking mind.

about this time every year those of us who would like to evolve and become a better person are tempted to make new years' resolutions.

there's nothing wrong with this. but- it's impossible to change overnight because while we are indeed carbon-based creatures, we're also mostly made of patterns and habits.

what to do?

non-duality, called 'advaita' in sanskrit (literally 'not two'), is the sublime realization that there do not exist any divisions separating things into polar opposites- such as up/down, hot/cold, etc., nor dividing our emotions into good/bad or us/them. the ancient yogis recognized it's specifically our mind's job to categorize reality- in an attempt to make sense of it and thereby try to gain 'control.'

the mind (manas), is like a supervisor in a factory- responsible for daily functioning, but was never meant to be existence itself. and because it's so much easier to delegate than to sort out reality we have given manas the reins and we no longer realize who we are.

when we can step back, way back- we gain perspective. yes, a cook stove is hotter than a popsicle but is cold in comparison to the temperature of the sun. a person who sees life in black and white is incapable of experiencing nuances like shades of grey. which of course is actually the marvelous continuum of reality.

to a yogi, a life lived in peace is non-dual. they understand that the thinking mind is trained to see differences, but our hearts see connectivity.

the most powerful illusion of all is the one that sees life as a separation from- instead of a invitation to, the party. life is a wonderful gift, and the material world comes with a time stamp.

either you're here, now- and grateful for the gift or you're caught up in the hustle. nothing else matters because there is nothing else.
