A little over a week ago, K9 Ryker and his handler were involved in a car accident, resulting in serious injuries to both of them.

🚔🐾Ryker was hospitalized with WVRC-Waukesha, needing emergent spinal surgery. He required around the clock care, love, and support.
It was a great honor to see him walk out of the hospital (with support!)
We send all of our love and best wishes to Ryker and his handler in their recoveries, and can’t wait to see Ryker for his rechecks! ❤️🩵

Tyson, the bravest boy, stole our hearts the moment he came in the door.
❤️ Tyson was hospitalized recently following a traumatic event, leading to major injuries and a penetrating wound to his chest. These wounds resulted in pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), pulmonary and respiratory changes, and a cardiac arrythmia.
❤️ To treat these injuries, he was on high flow oxygen for several days (pushing high pressured oxygen into his lungs to allow them to heal), continuous cardiac monitoring along with interventional medications when needed. He had a nasogastric tube for medications, as well as a urinary catheter to keep him clean and comfortable while recovering.
🎬 Tyson spent majority of his recovery in our critical patient bed, listening to calming music and watching pet friendly movies, all while receiving non stop love and snuggles from his care team.
🌞 We were so happy to see Tyson back for his recheck, barking and playful, back to his normal self!🌞

Meet Joey! ❤️🐾
Joey has been a patient of our neurology team, led by Dr. Williams, for nearly four years as he continues treatment for meningoencephalitis.
When Joey was first diagnosed, his prognosis was guarded. Through dedicated care, an individualized treatment plan, and his incredible determination, Joey has continued to defy the odds. His journey is a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved through the partnership of a devoted family and a compassionate medical team.
One of our favorite things about Joey is that he truly loves coming to the hospital! He never says no to treat and enjoys all the love and attention from our team during each visit. His bright personality never fails to bring smiles to our day.
Thank you to Joey's amazing parents for trusting us to be part of his journey. We are so proud of everything Joey has accomplished and look forward to seeing him again soon! ❤️🐶

🥪 Lunch and Learn highlight: Our Veterinary social worker, Neil met with staff at the Brookfield Veterinary Wellness and Urgent care to discuss mental health, in their brand new clinic!

Neil touched on common mental health concerns in the veterinary medicine field including: burnout, compassion fatigue, traumatic experiences and emotional stress. For the learning portion of our discussion, we went over coping mechanisms to help staff regulate themselves physically and emotionally. 💞

Staff also provided examples of situations they had experienced in the clinic, and applied what they had learned to the scenario to create a plan for how to address those experiences in the future. One of the examples Neil included was a visualization technique used to calm the central nervous system, and slow down racing thoughts during high stress moments.

🏥 Some highlights from our recent restraint lab, hosted by our technician learning and development team, Megan and Stephany!

Veterinary technicians practiced fear free and safe animal restraint on some volunteer employee pets. Whiskey the pup and Dash the cat graciously donated their time in exchange for pets and treats to help our technicians practice!

Safe restraint is an essential part of any animal's exam at our hospital, and we take our employee safety very seriously, and practice helps prevent accidents and injuries!

🦴 August 2nd is Give a Dog a Bone day - so today is a good day to share some tips to prevent choking! 🍗

Our emergency room frequently sees canines of all shapes and sizes for a suspected "foreign body obstruction" which generally means the dog (or sometimes cat) has eaten something they shouldn't, or it's become stuck in their digestive tract. Prevention is one of the biggest measures a pet guardian can take to prevent obstructions, choking or GI distress.

Bully sticks, raw and cooked bones as well as rawhide or antlers can be culprits of obstruction when they reach a size that your pet may consider swallowing it whole. Chunks broken off from a raw or cooked bone can also become stuck or lodged in the intestinal tracks, causing tears or obstructions and gastro discomfort.

Here are a few quick tips for choosing the right type of hard chew for your dog:
🐕 Choose a bone size and shape appropriate for your dog’s size.
🍖 Know the type of chewing your dog enjoys: gnawing, shredding, breaking down large pieces into smaller bits.
🍗 Only give your dog a block/bone/chew large enough that they can’t eat or swallow whole.

"Pick chews that suit your dog’s personality, age, and chewing style. What is safe for one dog might not be a good choice for another. A dog treat may be edible, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe. For example, if your dog breaks off large chunks and swallows them whole, that could lead to serious complications like choking or an obstructed bowel."

🦴 Critical Care/Surgery Patient Spotlight! 🦴
Chewy presented to our emergency room recently as a transfer from his primary vet in the UP of Michigan. 🐶 Chewy was bitten by a larger dog and sustained a large amount of trauma to his chest.
Further diagnostics and imaging showed the need for a wound explore.
Surgery for Chewy included right caudal lung lobectomy, right thoracic wall reconstruction, a chest tube placement, and superficial wound debridement and closure. That's a lot for a little guy like Chewy!
Despite all of this, Chewy handled recovery like a champ! He was even up and eating the next day!
He spent several days in hospital on oxygen support, pain medications, and received bandage and chest tube care/monitoring. ⚕️
When he went home, he was acting like his normal spunky self, brighter, and ready to take on the world!
