Sleep is a cornerstone of our overall health. 🛏️😴
As we fall into school routines again, it is a great time to get back into a sleep routine as well. It’s amazing what a few small changes can make to your overall sleep hygiene. Start by exploring or adding in just one or two habits that you know work for you and build up from there.
See our suggestions below.
Do you have any we should add to the list? 💤🥱

We agree, dogs are our best friends. And we are lucky enough to have one on staff! 🐶🦴

On National Dog Day we celebrate Opal. She works with Rheanna here at the office during some sessions. Opal and Rheanna are a certified therapy dog team who have been helping clients together since 2022.

And because one of the best ways to brighten someone’s day is to share dog photos, we wanted to show off our other furry friends, too. Enjoy some of our family pets!

We’d love to see a photo of your best friend as well. Please post in the comments🐕‍🦺

Hope for a Better Tomorrow was founded on a simple but powerful belief: that every person deserves compassion, understanding, and the opportunity to heal. That vision came from our founder, Dr. Sheila Gissibl, whose dedication to providing exceptional mental health care created a practice where clients and clinicians alike could feel supported, valued, and inspired.

Now, Hope for a Better Tomorrow enters a new chapter with deep gratitude for the foundation she built. While leadership has changed, our mission remains the same. We are committed to carrying her vision forward—continuing to provide compassionate, evidence-based care, investing in our team, and expanding opportunities to serve our community.

When Summer Doesn't Feel Light: Navigating Grief in a Season of Joy

Summer is often accompanied by a belief that this time should be happier and more carefree. But, when coping with loss, it may feel very different. More time with loved ones may mean more time to reflect on and notice loss, and what once made summer feel exciting can bring grief to the surface. If you notice your grief feeling heavier, it doesn’t mean you’re moving backward, it means your loss continues to intersect with the moments that matter most to you.

Many people also experience a sense of guilt associated with continuing on without their loved one, specifically referred to as “survivor’s guilt.” You may notice a sense of guilt while engaging in joyful activities without the person you’ve lost or for choosing to not participate in activities that once brought you joy.

Some individuals find themselves comparing their grief to others and wondering when they will be “over” it. These thoughts are common but often rooted in unrealistic expectations and judgement rather than truth. While grief looks different for everyone, we know that grief changes through the seasons of life and evolves. Summer events that once felt emotionally “simple” may now feel more complex. It is possible to experience moments of joy while also carrying deep sadness.

When I support clients through grief, I often encourage a practice of self compassion instead of self judgement. This could be giving yourself permission to decline invitations, modifying plans that no longer feel right, or creating new traditions that honor your loved one. Visit a meaningful place, continue on with an activity they enjoyed, or share memories with those who share the loss of that person. Staying connected with your support system can help you maintain a lens of self compassion and reduce the emotional load of grief.

Lastly, it’s important to remember there is no right way to grieve. Your emotions are not a sign of failure or weakness, but rather a reflection of the love you still have for the person you lost. If this summer feels difficult, gently remind yourself that the way you feel at any moment is valid and okay to feel. Focus on caring for yourself each day, and honor your need for rest and your capacity for hope. Grief requires validation, not criticism, to be processed. You deserve the same compassion you would offer to a friend walking a similar path.

If you'd like support along the way, we at Hope for a Better Tomorrow are here to help.

Take care,
Danielle Tobin, M.S., LPC
