How Do You Know If You Need a Diagnostic Sleep Study? (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

FAQ: How do you know if you need a diagnostic sleep study?

If you experience chronic snoring, wake up gasping for air, struggle with morning headaches, or feel constantly fatigued despite spending eight hours in bed, your body is sending you a signal. A diagnostic sleep study evaluates your breathing patterns and oxygen levels throughout the night to determine whether Obstructive Sleep Apnea or another sleep disorder is keeping you from reaching restorative rest.

Sleep Tip: Limit Late Summer Screen Time (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

Sleep Tip: Long summer evenings make it easy to stay on devices late. The blue light emitted by smartphones, tablets, and TVs suppresses melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep. Swap screen time for a book 30–60 minutes before bed to prep your brain for sleep!

Myth: Snoring Is Only an Adult Problem. (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

Fact: Snoring in children is a major red flag for sleep-disordered breathing. While it might sound harmless or even cute, regular snoring means your child is struggling to move air through their airway. This lack of oxygen disrupts their deep sleep cycles, which can lead to behavioral issues, daytime fatigue, and developmental delays. Healthy sleep should always be completely quiet.

Adjust Your Sleep Position: Sleep on Your Side to Keep Your Airway Open. (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

Sleeping on your back allows gravity to pull the tongue and soft tissues toward the back of the throat, which can easily collapse the airway and trigger snoring or sleep apnea episodes. Shifting to your side helps keep the airway naturally clear, significantly reducing snoring and improving your oxygen levels throughout the night. What Is 'Labored Breathing' and How Do I Spot It in My Toddler? (Koala Center for Sleep Disorders)

Sleep should be quiet and effortless. "Labored breathing" means your toddler is physically straining to breathe. Watch for a chest that pulls in deeply, flaring nostrils, or heavy gasping. If you see these signs, it's time to check their airway.
