Desmond Durham, a 36-year-old single father, earned his Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Montclair State University while working three jobs to support his son.

By day, he worked as a health and physical education teacher at Barringer High School. In the afternoon, he served as the district coordinator for Newark’s elementary basketball program, while still balancing other responsibilities.

Desmond said he never saw himself as the smartest person in the room. What pushed him forward was drive, discipline, and the determination to keep going.

His 9-year-old son became his biggest motivation through the long days and late nights.

Desmond’s story shows how love, sacrifice, and purpose can turn pressure into progress.
