Eventually this will be coming to a spa near you.
One question - what happens when you’re lying vulnerable under a machine, naked, and it malfunctions?
Sure we have mechanical massage tools like chairs that robo “massage”. I’ve never sat in one that actually felt good.
There’s hydro massage machines like you see at gyms that shoot water at a high pressure up and down your body while you lie under a tarp. Does that feel comfy?
There’s equipment you can purchase to help assist in your healing journey in between sessions with a massage therapist. And I often recommend products like this to clients.
But it isn’t the same as getting a massage from a licensed professional.
A machine isn’t going to notice when you’re squirming, that the pressure is too deep for you. That when you’re holding your breath, you have deeper layers to work on more slowly. That when you’re laughing at a certain point on a tight muscle, the pressure is too much, too fast or too pointy.
A machine doesn’t care. It can’t care. It has no empathy or sympathy or understanding of what you may be going through.
When you give your muscles and tissues to an educated and experienced massage therapist, whom you trust, you know you will never be put into a position with the question I posed above. Machines and AI will always end up being cheaper, but they can’t replace skill, human connection and the complexity that surrounds the human body, with caring touch.
In a world full of menus and options, I would like to believe massage therapy with a competent human, can never be replaced.
