To all my EMDR therapists who panic when they’re asked this question on a consultation call…

I get it. I used to panic too.

The truth is, it’s so hard to talk about EMDR in a way that our potential clients understand it and in a way that lands them on our therapy couch.

Because EMDR is complicated, and nuanced, and gray.

It makes sense that marketing is hard for EMDR therapists. As an EMDR therapist and business owner, I knew this but no one named it for me. I struggled with marketing and spent too much money on things that didn’t work.

It’s sooo normal to feel like you’re not doing a good job. You went to grad school and did EMDR training to learn the clinical work. How to show up for your clients, actively listen, understand symptoms and heal trauma.

But the truth is that you were never taught how to run a business. And if you’re working in private practice…you work in a business, even if you’re under someone’s group practice umbrella.

Dissociation is one of those concepts that can take years to really understand.

And I believe that EMDR requires us to understand it, because we’re not working with surface-level stuff. We’re working with complex trauma. We’re working with clients who have the kind of presentations that haven’t shifted with talk therapy or other modalities.

This is what makes EMDR different. Because we understand and work with concepts such as dissociation (even when we don’t plan to), because with PTSD, it always comes into the room.

I’m not here for the old myth that we can’t do EMDR with dissociation present. Yes, it looks different. But it’s still EMDR.

I’m here to name the complexity of this work we do as EMDR therapists.
