During pregnancy, wellness is about more than checking off a list of healthy habits.

It means having the right care for your individual pregnancy—including appropriate monitoring, managing existing health conditions, recognizing potential complications and making informed decisions with your healthcare team.

For pregnancies with higher-than-average risks, maternal-fetal medicine specialists may provide additional expertise and monitoring alongside the patient's obstetric care team.

At Mariposa Perinatal Services, maternal-fetal medicine care is consultative and provided in collaboration with the referring OB/GYN. If your OB/GYN believes a maternal-fetal medicine consultation is appropriate, they can refer you to our practice.

August is National Breastfeeding Month, a time to recognize the many ways families nourish and care for their babies—and to make sure parents know that support is available when they need it.

Breastfeeding can be a rewarding experience, but it doesn’t always come easily. Questions about latch, milk supply, pumping, returning to work, medications, or simply wondering, “Is this normal?” are all reasons to reach out for support.

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

🤱 Texas WIC Breastfeeding Resources
Texas WIC offers breastfeeding education and support, including lactation consultants, peer counselors, classes, and online resources. https://www.texaswic.org/breastfeeding

📞 Texas Lactation Support Hotline: 855-550-6667
Free, confidential breastfeeding support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to anyone in Texas.

At Mariposa Perinatal Services, we believe parents deserve compassionate, evidence-based support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period—including support for their individual infant-feeding goals.

This National Breastfeeding Month, let’s normalize asking for help, seeking reliable information, and finding the support that works for your family.

💙 August is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Awareness Month.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare inherited genetic condition that can affect muscle strength and movement. During pregnancy, prenatal screening and genetic counseling may help expectant parents better understand their risk factors and available testing options.

At Mariposa Perinatal Services, we're committed to supporting families through education and informed prenatal care. This month, we join others in raising awareness of SMA and recognizing the importance of early detection, ongoing research, and compassionate support for those affected.

💜 July is Group B Strep (GBS) Awareness Month.

Did you know that Group B Strep is a common type of bacteria that many healthy adults carry without symptoms? During pregnancy, however, GBS can be passed to a baby during labor and delivery if left untreated.

That's why routine GBS screening is typically performed between 36 and 37 weeks of pregnancy. If your test is positive, receiving antibiotics during labor can significantly reduce the risk of passing the bacteria to your baby.

💜 Knowledge and early screening help support healthier outcomes for both mom and baby. Talk to your provider today to see if a referral to Mariposa Perinatal is right for you.

💜 CPR & AED Awareness Week is a great reminder that being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency.

For expectant and growing families, learning CPR can provide added confidence and peace of mind. Whether it's understanding basic life-saving techniques or knowing how to respond while waiting for emergency services, these skills can help you feel more prepared to protect the people you love most. 👶❤️

This week, we encourage families to take time to learn or refresh their CPR knowledge and become familiar with AEDs. A little preparation today can have a lasting impact tomorrow. View more resources at https://cpr.heart.org/en/training-programs/cpr-and-aed-awareness/cpr-and-aed-awareness-week

🧠 Pregnancy can place added stress on the cardiovascular system, which is why monitoring conditions like high blood pressure is so important.

Warning signs like severe headaches, vision changes, sudden swelling, dizziness, weakness, or difficulty speaking should never be ignored during pregnancy. Early evaluation and close monitoring can play an important role in protecting both mother and baby. 💗

Mariposa Perinatal works alongside OB/GYN providers to support women experiencing high-risk pregnancies and conditions requiring specialized maternal-fetal care.
