📖 ABCs of Yoga - Day 20: Ātman

Ātman - the deepest Self. The essence of who we are beneath the roles, labels, stories, accomplishments, fears & expectations we carry throughout life.

In yogic philosophy, Ātman isn’t the personality or the ego. It’s the quiet, witnessing presence within us - the part that simply is. The part that remains when we stop trying to become something for everyone else.

Sometimes yoga isn’t about changing who you are.

It’s about remembering who you have always been. ✨

🧘🏻‍♀️This evening’s practice:
Sit quietly for a few minutes. Let your breath settle. Ask yourself:

“Who am I when I’m not trying to be anything?”

Don’t search for an intellectual answer. Just notice what arises beneath all the noise.

🌿 Your invitation:
Spend a little less time defining yourself & a little more time experiencing yourself.

That stillness, that awareness, that inner knowing…

Perhaps that’s where the journey toward Ātman begins.

📖 ABCs of Yoga - Day 19: Ashwini Mudra 🔆

Ashwini Mudra, the practice of gently contracting & releasing the muscles of the pelvic floor & a**l sphincter, is often translated as the “horse gesture.” 🐎

Why a horse? The name comes from observing a horse’s natural, rhythmic contraction & relaxation of the a**s - particularly after eliminating. Yogis saw this instinctive movement as a powerful example of how the body naturally regulates, releases & gathers energy.

A simple practice:
Sit comfortably with your spine upright. Close your eyes & bring your awareness to your pelvic floor. Gently contract the muscles around the a**s, hold for a moment & then completely release. Continue slowly for 5–10 rounds, coordinating the movement with your natural breath. No straining, gripping, or forcing - the release is just as important as the contraction.

Then pause. Sit quietly & notice.

Ashwini Mudra reminds us that awareness is the beginning of transformation. Yoga isn’t always about making a big movement - it can be about noticing the smallest ones.

Where do you feel the energy?
What happens when you consciously soften after creating tension?

🧘🏻‍♀️Our invitation to you: Try Ashwini Mudra for just one minute. You don’t need a mat, special clothing, or a studio. You simply need awareness.

Some of the most powerful practices aren’t the ones anyone can see. Sometimes the practice is happening deep within.

✨ Contract. Release. Breathe.
✨ Notice. Soften. Connect.

📖 ABCs of Yoga - Day 18: Ashtanga 8️⃣

Ashtanga means “eight limbs” & refers to the eight-fold path of yoga described by the sage Patanjali which guides us far beyond the physical 🧘🏻‍♀️ postures:

🌿 Yama - ethical living
🌿 Niyama - self-discipline
🌿 Asana - physical posture
🌿 Pranayama - breath control
🌿 Pratyahara - turning inward
🌿 Dharana - concentration
🌿 Dhyana - meditation
🌿 Samadhi - supreme union

Ashtanga once again reminds us that yoga is not simply something we do with our bodies on the mat or in our chair - it’s a way of living, practicing awareness & connecting with something deeper within ourselves & the world around us.

✨ The poses are only one limb of the journey. The real practice begins when we take what we learn on the mat into the rest of our lives.

If you haven’t yet attended a potting event at The Plant Barn - Purkey Landscaping you are absolutely missing out! What a great way to spend just an hour of your time. They supply the giant pot, the soil, all the beautiful healthy plants & have the option to purchase cute little extra adornments to add to your planter. I truly love the way mine turned out & my kitty in the window Ms. Rayn was clearly enamored as well! 🤩

Creating a planter arrangement doesn’t have to be just another gardening task to check of your seasonal list, it can easily become a mindful yogic experience.

Slow down, tune into your breath, feel the soil between your fingers. Relax, notice all of your senses. The colors, textures, scents & shapes.

Let go of perfection & allow yourself to arrange your creation with intention.

Gardening can be meditation in motion.

A beautiful reminder that yoga isn’t just something we do on the mat or in our chair.

Yoga is a way of being.

Yoga is a way of life.

Pepper it into your day as often as you possibly can.

Follow their page & watch for other upcoming events! ♥️😎✌🏼

📖 ABCs of Yoga - Day 17: Āśrama

Āśrama is a stage or period of life. In the yogic tradition, life is viewed as a journey through four phases:

🧘 Brahmacharya - the student stage - focused on learning & discipline
🏡 Gṛhastha - the householder stage - centered on family, work, relationships & contribution
🌳 Vānaprastha - the forest dwelling stage - gradually stepping back from worldly responsibilities & turning inward
🕉️ Sannyāsa - the renunciate stage - letting go, devotion, wisdom & spiritual freedom

Each stage has its own lessons, responsibilities, challenges & opportunities for growth.

Yoga reminds us that we don’t have to be the same person in every season of our lives. We are meant to evolve, let go & step into what each chapter is asking of us. 🕉️

✨ Honor the season you’re in right now
✨ Learn what it has to teach you
✨ Trust that your next chapter will come when it’s time

The beauty of Āśrama is the reminder that every chapter of life has a purpose.
We aren’t meant to cling to who we once were - we’re meant to grow into who we are becoming.

Always honor the season you’re in. There is wisdom waiting for you there.

📖 ABCs of Yoga - Day 16: Asana 🧘🏻‍♀️

Asana is the physical posture or ‘seat’ of yoga.

However, asana is more than simply “doing the poses.” It’s about finding a steady, comfortable place in your body so your mind can become still. Each posture invites you to listen, breathe, soften, strengthen & just become more present & aware.

Much of the asana you see today didn’t even exist when yoga began. According to tradition, Adiyogi appeared in the upper regions of the Himalayas over 15,000 years ago where he sat in absolute stillness & silent meditation. He didn’t speak for months. Imagine!

While this may be considered extreme by us Westerners, yoga clearly isn’t just about making our bodies fit certain poses, it’s about allowing the poses to help us become more at home in our body, mind, heart & spirit.

Today, take time to notice how you FEEL in your asana - not how you look in it.
