One of the most frustrating parts of leaving religion is realizing that leaving the church doesnât automatically remove the conditioning.
You can stop believing the doctrine and still:
âą distrust yourself
âą feel guilty for having needs
âą seek permission from authority figures
âą fear being wrong
âą abandon yourself to keep the peace
âą struggle to know what you want
Because indoctrination isnât just a set of beliefs.
Itâs a set of emotional patterns, survival responses, and nervous system adaptations that continue operating long after youâve left.
And until those patterns are recognized, they often keep us recreating the very dynamics we were trying to escape.
The good news?
What was learned can be unlearned.
