Who is this, you ask?

This is Easy.

Unfortunately, Easy has had no such thing over the last couple of months. He has dealt with a barrage of medical problems, and one of those led to laminitis.

While his feet were shod, they weren’t quite giving him what he needed. He was still painful and showing a shifting front-leg lameness. So we hoof-tested his feet, figured out where he could and could not bear weight, and built his shoes accordingly.

More often than not, when a horse is or has been laminitic, they can benefit from an adjustment because they shift so much weight to the rear end. Easy was no exception. His pelvis and lumbars were out and needed attention.

But how did Easy’s dad hear about Firewater Equine, you ask?

Simple. Hammy marched his tail right through his son’s doggie door and announced his presence.

So, as it turns out, Hammy wasn’t missing at all. He was going door to door, rounding up business. When they researched where Hammy belonged, they found Firewater Equine. And Firewater Equine was exactly what Easy was looking for.

Cool Case Alert 👀

This calf roping mare came to Firewater Equine with a history of an old rope-related neck injury that left her very tight and restricted through the atlas/C2 area. Her owners had already been working to find the right path forward, and at this visit Dr. Loe felt the best first step was acupuncture only so her nervous system would not be overloaded.

She had severe tension through the neck, very limited flexion left and right, and some muscle atrophy on the left side near the atlas. Dr. Loe used acupuncture for myofascial release in the neck, moxa to help ease tension, and B12 support for a locked pelvis.

By the end of the treatment, her owners said it was the calmest they had seen her. She was already turning her neck farther and moving more naturally. One of their biggest concerns was that she had become increasingly anxious backing into the box, which can often point back to pain and restriction.

She’ll be back in two weeks for treatment number two, and we’re looking forward to seeing how she continues to improve.

Sometimes real progress starts with giving the body a little relief and a chance to breathe again.

Stiff hips, slower movement, and arthritis-related discomfort are common challenges for older horses, but common does not mean they have to be ignored.

In this session, Dr. Loe used acupuncture to help support comfort, mobility, and overall function in an older horse needing a little extra care through the hips. Some people leave their mark on a place long before anyone else ever walks through the door.

For Firewater Equine, Mike Zumar has been one of those people.

From helping with the construction of the facility and fencing, to stepping in for minor repairs and lending a hand when it was needed, Mike has been part of our journey in ways that deserve to be recognized. More than that, he has been a longtime friend that I don't take for granted.

Hammy’s Adventure: The Unplanned Journey Home 🐾

Hammy recently decided clinic life was getting a little too predictable, so he took off on an adventure none of us approved, scheduled, or emotionally prepared for.

Somewhere along the way, our favorite Firewater mascot hopped a ride, possibly with a client, possibly with a construction truck from next door, and ended up about 4 miles from home.

For days, the kind folks who found him could hear meowing, but they couldn’t find the mystery cat. They don’t have cats. They do, however, have a doggie door.

And on day 7, in true Hammy fashion, he skipped the formal introduction, marched himself through that doggie door, and woke them up.

Startling? Yes.
Iconic? Also yes.

We’re so thankful for the people who helped bring Hammy’s adventure to a safe ending and even more thankful to have him back where he belongs. His days of “seeing the world” are hopefully behind him, but knowing Hammy, we’ll be keeping a much closer eye on the travel arrangements around here.
