You think you’ve heard every way to tune a cutting horse. Then Punk Carter and Jeff Williams start talking about how they used to do it.
John Carter had the first one was a little horse called Rocky Joe Mack. Somebody else had started him. Daddy finished the job, hauling him to cuttings in the back of a pickup with a sideboard. The whole herd was Punk, Roy, Mama, and a chow dog. Mama balked. Roy quit. When the horse needed more charge, the dog went in the pen.
Jeff’s bright idea wasn’t any cheaper. He and Mike caught a bunch of wild pigs, put them on feed, and figured they’d work them in a solid round pen. The pigs never gained an ounce. A pig will make about two turns, then he’s mad and coming at the horse. Three hundred dollars in feed. Two days of work.
They worked goats too. One drove a nose sideways. Two pencils, no doctor, back to work.
That’s the good part of these stories. Not the hardship. The way they tell it.
