A groundbreaking study examining the relationship between beekeeping and longevity has revealed that apiarists (beekeepers) may possess a distinct biological advantage that allows them to age more slowly than the general population. Published in the journal PMC, the research focused on telomeres—the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that serve as a crucial indicator of cellular aging. Scientists discovered that beekeepers had significantly longer telomeres than non-beekeepers of the same age. Because telomeres naturally shorten as cells replicate and degrade over time, the maintenance of greater telomeres length among beekeepers provides direct, molecular evidence of a delayed biological clock and a reduced rate of cellular senescence (senescent cells are often called “zombie cells” because they refuse to die despite being heavily damaged, and they can “infect” surrounding healthy cells with dysfunction).

Researchers attribute this anti-aging phenomenon primarily to the regular, long-term consumption and handling of nutrient-dense bee products. The study demonstrated that both the duration of years spent consuming these products and the daily frequency of their intake directly correlated with longer telomeres. Hive elements such as raw honey, propolis, and royal jelly are densely packed with potent antioxidants and bioactive compounds that actively combat oxidative stress and promote cellular repair. Additionally, consistent exposure to the anti-inflammatory properties of bee venom—combined with the outdoor physical activity and mindfulness required to keep a colony calm—creates a unique environmental synergy that effectively acts as a natural defense against the traditional markers of aging.

Safely lay atop active beehives inhaling the potent hive air, relaxing to the resonant deep hum, and immersing yourself into the wonder of the honeybees. This healing modality has been used for centuries in European countries to help support respiratory and nervous system health. Now, you too can reap these benefits in Weaverville, NC!

The bees cannot get inside where you rest as they have a separate entrance to the hives under the benches. Triple layer screen protection keeps the experience of inside the hive close, but not too close!

Some of my sweetest memories began at the edge of a beehive, watching my dad work his apiary.

I grew up as a beekeeper’s daughter, where the rhythm of life was guided by the hum of honeybees. I remember often lying in the grass in front of the hives on warm afternoons, watching thousands of bees move in perfect harmony—each one with a purpose, yet together creating something deeply peaceful.

In those moments, time seemed to slow. The world felt softer, simpler, and whole.

What I didn’t realize then—but understand deeply now—is that those moments were shaping my nervous system, grounding me, and teaching me a natural state of calm and connection. There was no fear, only fascination. No individual noises, only a kind of living music.

Other times, when my parents weren’t around, I would sit on top of the beehives, watching the tiny buzzing workers return with bright, varied pollen. The steady hum beneath me felt as natural as a heartbeat.

When it was time to harvest honey, my dad would call all the neighborhood kids over, and we’d gather around a big table with pieces of honeycomb in our hands, squeezing out golden honey. We tried so hard to wait—but it was impossible not to sneak a taste before our tasks were done.

I didn’t just observe the bees—I felt connected to them.

One day, I decided they deserved more than the small spoonfuls my dad and I would leave at the hive entrance. So while he was away, I brought them a whole jar of honey and set it nearby. When I returned later, hundreds of bees were inside, sinking and struggling.

I carefully lifted them out one by one, placing each tiny body gently onto the grass, determined to save them. I saved nearly every one—until one reminded me they are still wild. It’s a moment I can still smile about.

And then there were the magical swarm days.

The sky would fill with bees—thousands moving together in a way that felt almost unreal. You could barely see the blue sky between them. It wasn’t frightening. It was awe-inspiring. Alive. Electric.

Years later, I experienced that feeling again when I caught my very first swarm—but this time, as a beekeeper myself.

I was resting in a hammock in my backyard, something I rarely take the time to do. Before I saw anything, I heard it—a deep, resonant hum building in the air around me. I looked up to see thousands of bees swirling above, moving into a swarm trap I had placed in the tree overhead.

I stood just feet away as they gathered, completely at ease, watching them settle into their new home. It felt deeply spiritual—calm, powerful, and alive.

In that moment, I was brought right back to those childhood afternoons—a sense of calm, awe, and connection returning all at once.

That feeling is what inspired me to create the Hive Haven Lounge.

A space where you can step out of the noise of everyday life, lie down, and be held by the gentle warmth, sweet scent, and healing hum of the hive.

Every experience is intentionally designed with deep respect for the bees and a strong commitment to safety, allowing you to relax fully in a calm and carefully guided environment.

Where your body can soften, your breath can deepen, and your mind, body, and soul can truly rest.

You don’t need to understand the bees. You only need to be still long enough to feel them.

The Hive Haven Lounge is a space where you can rest, breathe, and reconnect—held gently by the living vibration of the hive.
