Mental health challenges can affect people from every background, yet barriers such as stigma, limited access to care, language differences and cultural misunderstandings can make it harder for some individuals and families to seek support.

At Catholic Charities, we believe every person is created with dignity and deserves compassionate, accessible care. This month, we recognize the importance of raising awareness, reducing barriers and creating communities where everyone feels seen, valued and supported.

No one should have to face life's challenges alone. ๐Ÿ’™

As we leave May behind and move into June of 2026 we still have a strong emphasis on mental health.
Menโ€™s Mental Health. There is often a strong focus on menโ€™s physical health โ€” fitness, annual checkups, and heart health โ€” but mental well-being is equally as important because mental health is health!
Just as the body needs care and attention, so does emotional and mental well-being. Yet, there is a silent crisis in menโ€™s mental health โ€” one that too often goes unnoticed or unspoken. Men are nearly four times more likely to die by su***de than women*, underscoring the urgent need to break this silence and seek support. Small steps to care for mental health can lead to significant change. Letโ€™s build a culture where men feel safe speaking up and reaching out. As a community, we can break the stigma, support one another, and ensure no one struggles in silence.

!!How Can You Help!!?
Start a conversation:
A simple conversation can spark transformation. Whether a father, brother, uncle, friend, or colleague, check in with the men in your life.
Share resources:
Help normalize seeking help by sharing information about mental health support services, hotlines, and local organizations.

๐Ÿ’šLet others know support is available โ€” and that it works.๐Ÿ’š

Create safe spaces:
Encourage environments โ€” at home, work, school, barbershop, gym, church, or in the community โ€” where men feel comfortable opening up without judgment. Sometimes, just knowing itโ€™s OK to talk makes all the difference.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, weโ€™re sharing real examples of how System Navigators help Iowans access mental health support.

Recently, a telehealth organization contacted our System Navigation team after a parent shared concerns about their childโ€™s behavior and mental health.

A System Navigator connected the family to Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS), psychological testing, community resources, and a Child Mental Health Wraparound program. They then successfully assisted the family in applying for a Child Mental Health Wraparound program. These services are now in place, and the child is receiving the needed care.

Connection to support and resources is just one call away. Call 515-505-8988 to connect with an Iowa PCA System Navigator today.
