A student of mine recently found out the FDA was coming to inspect her small herbal product line.

As someone who used to get inspected once a year, I know exactly how much that rattles your nerves.

When the inspector showed up, he was concerned about the cyanogenic glycosides in elderberries.

You know where he was doing his research?

Google AI.

Our government officials regulating foods and drugs are turning to Google AI. And that is scary if you think about it.

Because Google AI pulls from the top five or so articles. And we know those are heavily influenced by people with a lot of money who want to control the narrative.

This isn’t new by the way. Once upon a time, some brilliant scientists discovered they could extract chemicals from plants, put them in tiny pills, and sell them for exponential profit.

👀Hey, look, it’s the pharmaceutical industry!

Anyway, for that to work, people had to forget about the plants they’d used as medicine for 60,000 years.

Stripping people of their ancestry knowledge, and the power to heal themselves was intentional then, and it still is today.

This is one of the many reasons I love teaching herbal medicine. The science, the history, the tradition, the nuance. Real knowledge from real experience, not pulled from an algorithm.

Just so happens that I’m opening something I’m really excited about.

The Herbalist’s Path Online Herbal Education Apothecary, brewed up from 25 years of living, breathing, doing this work. All in one easy place.

I got to be part of a small gathering of herbalists and naturopaths this past weekend, and I’m still sitting with the gratitude of it. The food was beautiful and nourishing. The conversations were deep. And the people in that room represented decades, probably centuries combined, of devoted work toward helping people heal and live more in tune with nature.

We were hosted in the Eclectic Herb Library, surrounded by books from Nicholas Culpepper dating back to 1702, and old remedies from Eli Lilly back when they were still selling gentian extract and dandelion extract. So cool to see & think about!

It was a powerful reminder of how deep these roots go, and how much natural medicine has always been an essential part of human healing.

And it reminded me of something I come back to again and again.
We need more of this. More community. More rooms filled with people who have given their lives to this work. There are so many beautiful humans out there doing the work in true dedication, and finding them, sitting with them, learning from them is one of the greatest gifts.

Thank you to Chris at Eclectic Herb for bringing us all together. It was truly lovely.💚

Thank you for a real good time Eclectic Herb!💚

When you learn to use one herb 40 different ways, instead of trying to cram 100 different herbs into your brain, you will become a more knowledgable, skilled, and empowered herbalist.

I dove much deeper on this reality in my latest podcast at The Herbalists Path on all your favorite players. Or drop 1-HERB and I’ll send you a link.

Keep learning, & keep growing friends! 💚🌼💚

Herbalism isn’t just about learning all the herbs you can cram in your head.

It’s about learning how the body works, so you can understand how the herbs work.

It’s about actually using and integrating those herbs into your lifestyle. Taking the time to get to know them better. To learn how they work with you and your unique body.

It’s about dancing in relationship with the plants, and this beautiful earth.

It’s about connection. To the plants. To yourself. To your people. To our planet.

Herbalism is a truly WHOLE-istic lifestyle. It’s not an instant fix or a cure trend on Instagram. It is an integrated way of being.

And, it’s the most empowering skillset you can learn. It sticks with you for life, whether you like it or not.

This is why we go deep into anatomy and physiology of one body system a month, and you learn how much each one impacts the other. So you can become more skilled, intuitive, if you will, when it comes to choosing the right herbs for a person or situation.

If that level of depth, relationship, and connection sounds like the flavor of herbalism you’re into, the Community Herbalist Certification & Mentorship may be the place for you.

Herbal friends in the Portland Oregon area, did you know you can have incredibly beautiful, organically grown, potent herbs grown just for you?

It’s true!

And if you’re anything like me, this is amazing news, because there’s never enough time to grow and harvest all the incredible herbs you want to make into medicine each year. (Or is that just a me problem?)

Anyway, my friend Gradey at Medicine Garden has an herbal CSH (Community Supported Herbalism) where you can pick up an abundance of plants to turn into wonderful remedies for you and your family. Only, you don’t have to do all the backbreaking hard work that goes into growing and harvesting herbs, and you still get to make it all while fresh.

Talk about a gift!

And, to be real, he’s got it priced at an unbelievably low price for all the work that goes into this.

That means you get to create the most beautiful, powerful, and amazing herbal medicine. And, you get the beauty of knowing your farmer, knowing it was grown with so much love and intention, making your medicine that much better!

Anyway, I could keep gushing on and on about this deal, but then this post would start getting awkward.
Point being, he’s only got so much space and time to grow these herbs, and that means only a few CSH spots.

So, if you’d rather be outside camping, playing, or whatever you like to do in the summer, get yourself some good medicine from Gradey!

First official drop is this coming weekend! 🌼

Not near PDX? Please go find your local herb farmer & support their amazing work! 💚💚💚

Herbalism is a gift!

The beauty of the plants you get to immerse yourself in.

Their smells! Oh, their smells…🥰

The connection to plants, and nature overall.

The empowerment of knowing what to do when the p**p hits the fan.

Not having to be fully reliant on our broken medical system for everything that ails you.

Knowing that you can help others. Your family, your friends, your community.

The never-ending learning and fascination.

The lifestyle it brings you into.

Knowing what you’re doing is not only better for you, but better for our planet too.

It’s truly the greatest gift I’ve ever given myself. Absolute beauty, joy, empowerment, connection, love. All of it!

I’m sure I could keep going with this list, but I’d be here for days.

That being said, I’d love to hear some of the reasons you love learning about herbal medicine. Share in the comments, excited to hear from others!💚

And if you’re thinking you’d love to dive deeper into the world of herbal medicine, to really understand how and why these herbs work with the body, but you’d like a guide or mentor to help show you the way…

Let’s chat!
My Community Herbalist Certification & Mentorship just may be what you’re looking for.

Have you ever heard of the Doctrine of Signatures?

It’s a traditional way people would learn about plants and their medicinal uses.

Often taking the time to really look at a plant, and recognize the ways it might resemble parts or even functions of the body.

It’s pretty cool once you start to see these patterns in nature.

🌿And this False Solomon’s Seal reminds me of it every time I see her popping up for the year.

This plant has been used by native peoples for joint pain and lumbar pain. And if you look at the structure of this plant, it resembles the vertebrae of the spine.

Maybe it takes a special kind of eye to see these things.

But the connection and relationship that develops when you take the time to really look, to really notice, is perhaps one of the most precious gifts you can ever give yourself.

Do you know about the Doctrine of Signatures?
Have you ever seen a plant that fits it, and so does the remedy? 💚
