When a child is super excited about something - Thomas the Tank Engine, tornadoes, musical theater, video games — we don’t see it as a distraction. We see it as a doorway into connection.

Most adults are the same! We’re more motivated when we care about what we’re doing, and when the outcome feels meaningful to us. Kids are no different.

That’s why BAC clinicians intentionally incorporate a child’s interests into sessions. And that’s why Matt (and his occupational therapist, Arielle) spent a recent session building an entire “dinosaur forest” - and then writing about it in detail 👏🦖👏🦖

The best therapy doesn’t happen *TO* a child - it happens *WITH* them, through the things that matter most to them. At the BAC, we follow a child's lead while bringing the clinical expertise to help them grow ✨

(And here's something fun - today is actually National Dinosaur Day! Something one of our dinosaur experts made sure we knew. We love that our kids teach us things, too 🤗)

SLP Spotlight for National Speech-Language-Hearing Month ✨

Last but never least, it's Carolyn! We can’t think of a better note to end on - her advice beautifully captures what this month has been all about: following a child’s joy, building trust, and growing communication through meaningful connection.

"Find the thing that sparks joy with your child and use that connection to build communication with them!"

If you’ve ever said, "If you want your juice, you need to say please!” ... you’re not alone.

From a neurodiversity-affirming pediatric SLP perspective, early language development is centered on functional communication, not social conventions.

“Juice” - full stop - is communication! We want to honor that. When kids see that their words work, we see less frustration and more communication.

As children build a foundation of language (often around 50+ words or when combining words), we can begin to introduce “please” and “thank you” more consistently.

Until then, we model polite language - without requiring it.

We have lots to say on this topic!
So PLEASE read more in today's blog post ... THANK YOU! ✨

SLP Spotlight for National Speech-Language-Hearing Month ✨

Another SLP origin story coming your way - today we’re featuring Ani and what led her to the field of speech-language pathology!

"Why did I choose SLP? My dad always jokes that I love to talk, and honestly...he's not wrong! But that love turned into something bigger: a passion for helping others find their voice, build confidence, and connect with the world around them. If I weren't an SLP, you would probably find me in the kitchen or on TV as a Food Network judge, still talking...just about food instead of speech!"

With a little more flexibility and a little less school-year hustle, summer can be a great time to focus on growing skills and confidence! We're excited to offer new feeding groups that support individuals and families in meaningful, practical ways ✨

Our remote groups for young people (ages 8-22) will focus on feeding interventions, resources, and home programming.

Our remote groups for caregivers will focus on education, effective language use, practical strategies and training for home carryover, and individualized recommendations and resources. Each session will include time for questions and personalized guidance.

SLP Spotlight for National Speech-Language-Hearing Month ✨

Today, get to know Sarah and what inspired her path to becoming an SLP!

"I always knew that I wanted to do something in healthcare, as I was brought up in a family of healthcare workers. At the same time, I also knew that I did not want to give up my life-long love for music, playing my various instruments. I began researching music within healthcare, which led me to an article on music therapy done within a speech and language therapy session. I was inspired by how many ways I could implement music within my sessions and loved the idea of one day becoming both a music therapist and a speech therapist. While I still hope to someday add on a music therapy degree, I’ve found countless meaningful and creative ways to incorporate my passion for music into my work as a pediatric SLP. Whether it’s using rhythm to support speech sound production, melody to enhance language learning, or musical play to increase engagement, music has become a natural and effective part of my therapy approach."

Fitness Friday: Jumping Jacks Edition 💥

Jumping jacks are a classic for a reason! They’re a simple way to get the whole body moving and the heart pumping.

This exercise helps build cardiovascular endurance, coordination, and motor planning, while strengthening the upper body, lower body, and core. It also challenges bilateral coordination, since both sides of the body have to move together in a rhythmic pattern.

Want to make it extra fun for kids? Try...
💥 Making it a game: Roll a die and do that many jumping jacks, or call out the colors of a traffic light (green = regular speed, yellow = slow, red = freeze)
💥 Adding imagination: Every 5 jacks, strike a superhero pose!
💥 Changing up the challenge: Try to land as quietly as possible, or move in super slow motion, or add a cognitive / language component (like singing the ABCs)
💥 Making it social: Play a game of follow the leader, where the leader chooses the style!
