Posted • Did you know newborn foals enter the world without a natural defense mechanism against infection? 🦠 Because antibodies in pregnant mares don’t cross the placenta into the foal’s blood stream before birth, the only way for a newborn foal to gain antibody protection is by ingestion of their mother’s colostrum, or first milk, which is why nursing is so important for newborn foals! 🐴

Failure to receive sufficient antibodies results in a condition known as the failure of passive transfer (FPT). Foals that have this condition are at high risk of developing life-threatening infections. When this foal arrived at , it was suffering from diarrhea due to failure of passive transfer. Thanks to some TLC and administration of gamma plasma and antibiotics 💉, it’s now on track to make a full recovery and return home!

Public service announcement for our boutique and commercial breeders alike!

This year Kentucky is experiencing an increase in the number of mares developing Nocardioform placentitis. A report from Kentucky suggests that, to date, over 100 mares have been affected. Nocardioform placentitis often results in late-term abortions, weak, and premature foals. We are seeing an increase in the incidence of Nocardioform placentitis in our own broodmare population here in New York.

One of the main signs to look for is premature udder development or premature lactation. Unfortunately, the severity of the disease doesn’t always correlate with external signs in the mare. While the condition cannot be prevented, a reproductive ultrasound may aid in early detection and the initiation of the appropriate treatment which can result in the delivery of a mature, viable foal.

If you have any questions regarding placentitis or wish to schedule a reproductive examination, contact Rhinebeck Equine.

This mare was managed as a high-risk pregnancy for 6 weeks by Dr. McNaughten, our board-certified reproductive specialist, and Dr. Javsicas, our board-certified internal medicine specialist, at the clinic and delivered a healthy foal at 337 days of gestation.

Nocardioform placentitis
The lesions on the placenta are found on the chorion (red velvety side) and are characterized by thick, brown, mucoid material.

Have you heard about the bird?
What bird?
The bird is the word?

And if you haven’t heard we are excited to celebrate one of our imported frozen semen breedings has resulted in a pregnancy for a New Hampshire based broodmare. The developing dressage dynamo is x Secret.
The owner has high hopes as the 2017 half brother was foal of distinction and the dam was the highest placed mare at the GOV (German Oldenburg Verband) inspections.
