HEALING PERSPECTIVES: TIME WELL SPENT, COUNSELING AND RESOURCE CENTER, LLC·FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2018·

As a wise young woman reminded me recently, "Sometimes, it hurts to be human." Often what brings someone to a therapist's office is the experience of suffering or ineffectiveness. What keeps someone coming back is relief from suffering and the gaining of insight, acceptance,

hope and effective skills that add joy, meaning and purpose towards a life well lived. I embrace faith, recovery, self-care, family, resiliency, vulnerability, humility, being mindfully present, and radical acceptance of what is, in order to fortify a solid foundation for positive change on a path to both feeling better and doing better. In practice since 1990, I am a Licensed Master's Social Worker (LMSW), Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC). In 2018, I completed Intensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy training while practicing and participating on a DBT Consultation Team for a period of 18 months. I hold advanced certifications in Family Therapy and Clinical Supervision. If you or someone you love is seeking counseling or resources/referrals to address addiction, relationship stress, parenting, trauma, special needs, aging, loss, mental health or personal growth, know that you are not alone. We often think love has to be loud.

Grand gestures.
Big words.
Expensive gifts.

But some of the healthiest relationships are built on something much smaller and more impactful.

“I noticed.”

I noticed you looked overwhelmed today.

I noticed you’ve been carrying a lot lately.

I noticed you smiled when you talked about that.

I noticed you got quiet.

I noticed you kept trying even when it was hard.

Being noticed tells someone:
“You matter enough for me to pay attention.”

That’s one of the deepest human needs we have.

Before trying to fix someone…
Before giving advice…
Before telling them what to do…

Start by noticing.

People rarely forget the people who made them feel seen.

What’s something someone noticed about you that you’ve never forgotten?

After enough pain, your mind can start preparing for the worst even when something good is right in front of you.

Learning to trust peace, kindness, and possibility again can be difficult, but it can happen.

What helped you believe that better things were still possible?

This is one of the fastest ways a small argument turns into a big one. One person wants to resolve it now. The other needs to step away first. And neither person can understand why the other won't just do it their way. But both strategies are valid. Talking is how one person repairs. Space is how the other person regulates. The problem isn't the difference. The problem is not having a shared agreement about what happens next. Try this: agree on a time to come back. Not 'later.' Not 'when I'm ready.' A specific time. That gives both people what they need. Save this if this keeps happening. Follow .

Being the understanding one feels noble until you realize what it's costing you. When you're always the calm one the patient one the one who holds space for everyone else people stop wondering if you need the same thing back. Your grace becomes an expectation not a gift. And over time you stop expecting anyone to show up for you either. This isn't about becoming less understanding. It's about realizing that your empathy was never meant to come at the expense of your own emotional needs. You deserve the same patience you give to everyone else. Save this if you've been carrying more than your share. Follow .
