Ok friends….I need a jug of water. Which ones should I get and why?

ANSWER:
Yes all plastic bottled water is not ideal as there are plastic toxins leaching into the water. These thicker plastic jugs are a little more stable and safe then thin individual bottles that you can squash down like a pancake.
Drinking water: not all bottled drinking water is created equal. Drinking water is a municipal source, meaning a city water source. Some companies will just take bottled drinking water and bottle it as is. Essentially all of the testing and quality control has been done for them by the local water companies. This makes it an easy way for them to make a profit. Some drinking water is filtered further with reverse osmosis or other purification processes. This type of water is typically a little better, however can still contain some chlorine and fluoride residue.
Spring water: sourced from a natural spring aka ground water. This has naturally occurring minerals. The bottling company then filters and disinfects, usually using UV light disinfection.

Bottom line: Spring water is typically the best choice overall. Trying to find thicker plastic water bottles if possible. Occasionally metal or glass options are available.

Note: never drink distilled water unless directed for detoxification purposes by a health care provider. Also if you are adding minerals due your water be careful of your source. Make sure they are free of flavoring and sweeteners. Many sea salts can have lead due to their source. Double check them with me if you are unsure.

If you are drinking tap water, a water filtration system is recommended due to high levels of contaminants in ground water like pesticides.

Test time again. 3 different “types” of eggs. What’s the difference? Which one is your best choice?

Answer:
Home grown is always the best! For those that have that option that is a plus. You know your chickens are cared for, have room to roam etc. If you are buying from the store, here’s what the labels mean.
Cage free: the chicken is allotted about 1 square foot of space, often in a barn, but little to no outdoor access.
Free range: the chicken is allotted about 2 square feet of space. Some outdoor space is provided. But this doesn’t always mean grass. Might be dirt or gravel.
Pasture raised: the chicken is allotted at least 108 square feet. Mostly grassy field, with ability to go into the barn or coop when they want.

This space is per bird. So if you see an 8 acre farm field with 20,000 chickens, they are considered free range due to them not being allotted at least 108 square feet each. Free range can be a little “grey,” as there is a lot of wiggle room between 108 and 2 square feet.
My best advice on this is to do a little research on the company you are buying your free range eggs from and see what their farm set ups are.
Pasture raised is definitely the gold on this line up, but free range can be ok, and more affordable for most as pasture raised can be quite pricy in comparison to free range. Cage free isn’t the best choice and the nutrition content of the egg is quite low. If your eggs are a deep yellow/orange, they are more nutritious. If they are a lighter pale yellow, they are not as beneficial.

Ok friends, test time…at the grocery store. Needing sour cream. Tell me which one I should choose and why?

Answer: full fat/regular. Everyone had some great answers as to why. In general I never suggest choosing anything that says “light,” “sugar free,” 1/3 less calories,” etc. This is because they are generally taking out more naturally occurring things and replacing them with synthetic substances. Synthetic never is good! In this case there is nothing synthetic added, just cutting the cream with skim milk to make it lower in fat. Also, DON’T BE AFRAID OF FAT! When there is an option for full fat anything, always choose full fat. Our body thrives on fats. When we eat something that has a higher protein to fat ratio we can cause blood sugar spikes, similar to eating sugar itself. In this case, the light option has more calcium and protein because of the milk they add too it to off set the fats from the cream. In the case of dairy, when they remove the fat, we have protein and sugar left over. So you will have more of a blood sugar spike then the full fat version. Calories are a big difference here too. If we are simply counting calories for our meals, the light version seems like a good choice. But the calories matter less than what the calories are FROM. If I eat calories from carbs and sugars, I am going to be hungry again soon after I’ve eaten. If I get that same calories from a mix of fats and proteins, I’m going to stay fuller longer, which leads to consuming less calories overall.

Thanks everyone for participating and be on the lookout for more grocery shopping tests!

Well Within Reach Patient Success Story...

When I first came to Well Within Reach, I was suffering from constant back pain, joint pain, and bloating. After working with Lisa, we were able to work on flushing out the heavy metals, and organ function. I didn't realize that some of the things I was eating were actually putting more stress on my body (because they were marketed as healthier options) they were putting a heavier workload on my liver. Before seeing Lisa I had a pretty good idea of the effects of environmental factors on my body, but there was so much I didn't know about. I've learned so much about nutrition along with organ function, environment, and living a healthy lifestyle. With the changes we have made my lower back pain, and pain in my body has improved drastically, and I no longer have issues with bloating. My overall health and well being has improved.
