August is here, which means that the first day of school is right around the corner! If your child hasn’t been identified as having speech errors in the classroom or doesn’t qualify for speech therapy at school, but you still have concerns with their speech - I can help! I still have an opening or two depending on where you’re located and I can even treat your child at their school if needed.
If you’re unsure about whether or not your child’s speech errors are age-appropriate, please try the quick screener below! The words listed in parentheses are examples of how your child may produce each target word in error. I recommend writing down each word from the list below and making notes of how your child says each one.
If your child is in Kindergarten, ask your child to say the following words:
Lamp (“wamp”)
Ball (“baw”)
Blanket (“bwanket”)
Flag (“fwag”)
Glad (“gwad”)
Clock (“cwock”)
Plane (“pwane”)
Chip (“tip” or “sip”)
Match (“mat” or “mass”)
Ship (“tip” or “sip”)
Fish (“fit” or “fiss”)
Jump (“dump”)
Orange (“orand”)
Say (“thay” or “day” or “tay”)
Miss (“mith” or “mid” or “mit”)
Zip (“thip” or “dip” or “tip”)
Buzz (“buth” or “bud” or “but”)
Stop (“top”)
Spot (“pot”)
Smoke (“moke”)
Snap (“nap”)
Skip (“kip” or “tip”)
Swing (“wing”)
Slip (“lip” or “whip”)
Fit (“pit” or “bit”)
Off (“opp” or “obb”)
Vet (“bet” or “pet”)
Love (“lub” or “lup)
If your child is in First Grade, ask your child to say the words above in addition to the following words:
Red (“wed”)
Car (“cauh”)
Door (“douh”)
Fair (“faiuh”)
Fire (“faiuh”)
Tiger (“taiguh”)
Near (“neeuh”)
Bread (“bwead”)
Frog (“fwog”)
Pray (“pway”)
Tree (“twee”)
Crib (“cwib”)
Green (“gween”)
Dream (“dweam”)
Thumb (“fum” or “dum”)
There (“fair” or “dare”)
With (“wit” or “wif”)
Feather (“feder”)
If your child is in Second Grade or above, ask your child to say the words above. If you notice your child producing any of the words above in errors, a speech evaluation is recommended. By second grade, the child’s speech should be easily understood by others without having any difficulty producing any speech sounds.
If you notice that your child is producing some of these speech errors, please call, text, or email me. I’d be happy to offer a free 15 minute phone consultation in addition to scheduling a full evaluation with your child if needed.
