At just 1 year old, Fritz's speech concerns were identified during a routine well-child exam. Because the concern was caught early, his mom, Rochelle Gorden, was connected with Great River Health's outpatient speech therapy team in Fort Madison and was able to start treatment right away.

Rochelle shares that if she had waited until Fritz started school to seek speech therapy treatment for his Apraxia, he would have missed valuable opportunities for early intervention and may have had access to far less therapy time.

Apraxia is a speech disorder where the brain has difficulty sending the right messages to the muscles used for speech. A child knows what they want to say, but their brain struggles to coordinate the mouth, tongue, lips, and jaw movements needed to produce words clearly.

With the support of his speech therapists and a collaborative approach between his therapy team and school, Fritz has made remarkable progress and is ready for the upcoming school year. Today, Fritz is thriving, and we're incredibly proud of how hard he has worked over the years.

Stories like Fritz's highlight why well-child exams are so important. They're about more than height, weight, and vital signs. They help ensure your child is developing on track and connect families with the resources and support they need when concerns arise.

Give your child the best opportunity to thrive. Schedule a well-child exam today by calling your P*P, Pediatrics on our Fort Madison campus, OR schedule directly in your MyChart app!

🌸 Take a stroll through the Serenity Garden on our Fort Madison campus with Martha Atwood. 🌸

If you know Martha, you know she has a gift for making things better than she found them. While she serves as an Administrative Assistant in Diagnostic Imaging, her impact reaches far beyond the walls of the clinic.

For years, Martha has poured her heart into helping care for the landscaping on our Fort Madison campus. Alongside our Facilities and Maintenance teams, she dedicates her own time, creativity, and energy to creating beautiful spaces for patients, families, visitors, and staff to enjoy. On many weekends, you'll find Martha and her husband tending to the gardens, nurturing the plants, and adding their special touch to help everything thrive and bloom season after season.

The Serenity Garden is more than flowers and landscaping. It's a place of peace, reflection, and comfort. It's a reminder that healing environments are shaped not only by the care provided inside our buildings, but also by the people who create welcoming spaces outside them.

We're grateful for team members like Martha, whose passion and dedication help make our campus feel at home. We'd also like to thank our auxiliary members and generous donors who support projects like these. Their contributions help us continue enhancing our campuses and creating beautiful spaces for our communities.

Every Great River Health campus has something unique to offer, and the Serenity Garden is one of Fort Madison's hidden gems. With the garden in full bloom, we invite you to stop, take a walk, and enjoy the beauty that so many caring hands have helped create. 💙

On July 24, 2026, the Great River Health Board of Directors shared the following leadership update at Great River Health:

Dr. Michael McCoy has made the difficult decision to step down as President and Chief Executive Officer to devote his full attention to his family during a difficult time.

The Board has appointed Jeremy Alexander as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, ensuring continuity of leadership while the Board determines the process for selecting the organization's next permanent President and Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. McCoy's connection to southeast Iowa spans decades. Before serving as President and Chief Executive Officer, he dedicated many years as an OB/GYN, caring for families throughout the region. He had the privilege of bringing thousands of babies into the world, and countless families have experienced his compassion, skill, and commitment during some of life's most meaningful moments.

As President and Chief Executive Officer for the past 4 years, Dr. McCoy led Great River Health through significant growth, transformation, and challenge while remaining steadfast in the organization's mission to improve the health of the people and communities it serves. His leadership has strengthened healthcare throughout southeast Iowa and left an enduring legacy of service, compassion, and commitment.

"Dr. McCoy has devoted his career to caring for others. First as a physician and then as the leader of Great River Health," said Board Chair John McKillip. "His impact reaches far beyond our hospitals and clinics. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we thank Dr. McCoy for his extraordinary leadership and decades of service to our patients, employees, and communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this difficult time."

Jeremy Alexander has served as Chief Financial Officer and a member of Great River Health's executive leadership team for many years, partnering closely with Dr. McCoy and the Board to advance the organization's strategic priorities. The Board has full confidence in Jeremy's leadership as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer.

"Great River Health has an exceptional team of providers, employees, volunteers, and leaders," Alexander said. "While we all wish these circumstances were different, I am honored by the Board's confidence and committed to supporting our team, caring for our patients, and continuing the mission that has always guided this organization. Great River Health remains committed to providing high-quality care throughout southeast Iowa and west-central Illinois. The organization's mission, vision, and commitment to serving its communities remain unchanged.”

Out of respect for Dr. McCoy’s family privacy, no additional information regarding his personal circumstances will be shared.

Back in April, Great River Health employees came together to support the Iowa Donor Network, raising more than $1,700 through employee pledges and bake sales at Henry County Health Center and Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, Fort Madison.

Thanks to the generosity of our employees who baked, donated, and purchased treats, we were proud to present a donation to the Iowa Donor Network. As Iowa's sole organ procurement organization, Iowa Donor Network works with donor families, healthcare teams, and transplant centers to facilitate organ and tissue donation, while also providing education and raising awareness about the importance of registering as a donor.

Throughout Donate Life Month, our campuses also participated in activities to honor donors and donor families, including flying the Donate Life flag and sharing educational resources with patients, visitors, and staff.

We are proud to support Iowa Donor Network and their work to create hope through donation. Every donor has the potential to save and heal lives, leaving a lasting impact on recipients, families, and communities across Iowa.
