When postpartum mental health is in the news, it's an opportunity to talk about something that deserves attention every day—not just during a headline.
Pregnancy and the postpartum period bring significant physical, emotional, and hormonal changes. While many people have heard of postpartum depression, there are several perinatal mental health conditions that can affect individuals before and after childbirth.
🤍 Postpartum Depression (PPD): Persistent sadness, loss of interest, feelings of guilt or hopelessness, changes in sleep or appetite, and difficulty bonding with your baby.
💙 Postpartum Anxiety (PPA): Excessive worry, racing thoughts, feeling constantly on edge, physical symptoms of anxiety, or difficulty relaxing.
💛 Postpartum OCD (PPOCD): Unwanted, intrusive thoughts that can feel frightening or distressing, often accompanied by repetitive behaviors or mental rituals to reduce anxiety. Experiencing intrusive thoughts does not mean someone wants to act on them.
❤️ Postpartum Psychosis (PPP): A rare but serious mental health emergency that may include hallucinations, delusions, severe mood changes, confusion, or a loss of touch with reality. Immediate medical evaluation is essential.
These conditions are medical conditions, not personal failures, and they deserve compassionate, evidence-based care. Early recognition and treatment can make a meaningful difference for both the individual and their family.
At Kudose Mental Health, we provide medication management and support for individuals experiencing mental health concerns before, during, and after pregnancy. If you or someone you love has noticed changes in mood, anxiety, sleep, intrusive thoughts, or emotional well-being during this season of life, know that you don't have to navigate it alone.
💙 The more we talk about postpartum mental health, the more we help reduce stigma, encourage understanding, and remind others that seeking support is a sign of strength.
