Happy Labor Day!

Today is a chance to recognize the hard work and contributions of generations of Americans who helped build the families, businesses, and communities we enjoy today.

In our work with older adults, we have the privilege of meeting people who have spent decades working, raising families, serving their communities, caring for others, and creating opportunities for the generations that followed.

Every person has a story.

A first job. A career they were proud of. A business they built. A family they supported. Lessons learned along the way.

This Labor Day, take a moment to ask an older adult in your life:

You might hear a story you've never heard before. ❤️

We recently had the opportunity to hear from a podiatry physician at a local senior-care networking event, including a hands-on demonstration that had a few volunteers kicking off their shoes.

It was a great reminder that foot health can play an important role in mobility, balance, comfort, and independence as we age.

For older adults, foot pain or other foot problems can make walking uncomfortable. And when walking becomes uncomfortable, people may naturally start moving less, avoiding certain activities, or becoming less confident getting around.

For families helping an aging parent, changes worth paying attention to can include:

👣 Complaints of new or persistent foot pain
🚶 Walking differently or becoming less steady
👟 Difficulty finding comfortable, properly fitting shoes
🪑 Avoiding walks or activities they previously enjoyed
🦶 Difficulty safely caring for their own feet or nails

These changes don't always mean something serious is happening, but they shouldn't automatically be dismissed as “just getting older.” A primary care provider or podiatry professional can help determine what's going on.

One of the reasons we value connecting with professionals throughout the senior-care community is that healthy aging involves so much more than one type of care.

Sometimes maintaining independence really does start from the ground up.

Sometimes the signs that a home is becoming too much have nothing to do with a fall.

For many older adults, the home they've loved for decades can slowly become harder to manage.

Maybe the stairs are avoided. Laundry becomes harder to keep up with. The yard isn't maintained like it once was. Repairs get delayed, or entire parts of the house simply aren't used anymore.

None of these signs automatically mean it's time to move.

But they can be a good reason for families to ask:

“Is the home still supporting Mom or Dad's independence, or is maintaining the home starting to get in the way of it?”

Sometimes the answer is simply a little more help around the house. Other times, it may be worth considering whether a different living environment would make everyday life easier.

❤️ The goal isn't necessarily to leave home. It's to make sure home is still helping them live well.

🎶 Elvis was in the building this week!

One of the fun parts of touring senior living communities with families is seeing what everyday life actually looks like beyond the apartments, dining rooms, and brochures.

During a community tour today, we walked into an Elvis concert for the residents. There was music, laughter, and plenty of Elvis nostalgia happening!

Moments like this are also a good reminder of something we encourage families to pay attention to when touring:

Are residents engaged?
Are there activities they would actually enjoy?
Are there opportunities to build friendships?
Does the community feel like somewhere your loved one could genuinely enjoy living?

Care, safety, and cost are incredibly important when choosing a senior living community. But so is quality of life.

And sometimes, apparently, that includes a little Elvis. 🎸

❤️ The Best Care Plan Starts With One Simple Question...

“What does a good day look like for you?”

When families begin planning for an aging parent, it's easy to focus on the practical questions:

Do they need help bathing or dressing?
Are medications being managed safely?
Is there a risk of falling?
Can they still live independently?

Those questions matter. But they don't tell us everything about the person we're trying to help.

Quality of life might mean:

☕ Having coffee with friends every morning
🐕 Continuing to care for a beloved pet
🙏 Attending church each week
🌷 Spending time outdoors or gardening
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Being close to children and grandchildren
🎨 Continuing a favorite hobby
🍽️ Enjoying meals and conversation with others
❤️ Simply having choices about how each day is spent

At Silver Compass, these are some of the things we want to understand when helping a family explore senior living or additional support.

A community can check every box on paper, but if it doesn't support the things that give someone's life meaning, is it really the right fit?

Care needs are important.

But so are personality, routines, relationships, interests, and the little things that make someone feel like themselves.

Before making a plan for someone you love, ask them:

“What would make life feel good to you?”

Their answer may tell you more than any checklist ever could.

🏡 Not All Senior Living Communities Are the Same

It's easy to tour several senior living communities and think, “They all seem pretty similar.”

But the differences that matter most aren't always obvious from the lobby or brochure.

Two communities located five minutes apart can offer very different experiences when it comes to:

❤️ Culture: Does the community feel warm, social, quiet, active, or more structured?

🎨 Activities: Are residents actually participating? Do the activities match your loved one's interests?

👩‍⚕️ Staffing & Care: What support is available today, and what happens if care needs increase?

🍽️ Dining: Is dining simply about providing meals, or is it an enjoyable and social part of the day?

🏠 Layout: Would your loved one feel comfortable navigating the building and getting to activities, meals, and outdoor spaces?

📈 Future Care: Can the community accommodate changing needs, or could another move eventually be necessary?

This is why we encourage families not to choose a community based on appearance, price, or location alone.

At Silver Compass, we help families compare communities based on the person who will actually be living there. Their personality, care needs, finances, interests, and long-term goals should all play a role.

And whenever possible, tour more than one option. Sometimes seeing the differences in person makes it much easier to recognize what feels right.

We’re excited to share that Silver Compass co-owner Jordan Kiphart has joined the board of the Cincinnati Senior Advocate Action Group (SAAG)!

SAAG brings together people and organizations throughout Greater Cincinnati who care about supporting older adults, with a strong focus on turning that support into action in our community.

Earlier this year, our family had the opportunity to build and sponsor two SAAG neighborhood pantry boxes to help make food and everyday essentials more accessible to local seniors. Getting involved with that effort gave us an even greater appreciation for the work SAAG is doing and the people behind it.

At Silver Compass, we believe supporting older adults goes well beyond healthcare or finding the right place to live. It’s also about dignity, connection, access to resources, and making sure seniors in our community know they haven’t been forgotten.

Jordan is grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside the SAAG team and looks forward to finding even more ways to support seniors throughout Greater Cincinnati.

Happy National Senior Citizens Day!

Today, we celebrate the older adults who have spent a lifetime building families, careers, friendships, and communities, while passing along lessons and stories that continue to shape the generations behind them.

At Silver Compass Senior Solutions, we have the privilege of meeting seniors with incredibly different backgrounds, personalities, goals, and life experiences. One thing remains constant: every older adult deserves to be heard, respected, and empowered to choose how they want to live.

Aging may bring changes, but it doesn't change the importance of:

❤️ Independence and dignity
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Meaningful relationships
🌱 Purpose and new experiences
💬 Having a voice in life's decisions
🏡 Feeling safe and comfortable wherever you call home

Today is a great opportunity to call a parent, visit a grandparent, listen to a story you've heard a hundred times, or spend a little extra time with an older adult who has made a difference in your life.

Growing older doesn't make someone's story less important. It means there are even more chapters worth celebrating.

We had a little extra fun celebrating the August birthdays with the residents this week!

My wife and I brought our daughter along to join the celebration, which made this visit especially meaningful. Just a few months ago, I was at the community hosting an event, and our daughter was born only a day later!

I remember keeping my phone close during the presentation just in case Robin called to tell me it was go time. My phone rang twice while I was there, and I think some of the residents were just as anxious as I was to find out if it was the call. 😂

It was so much fun going back, catching up with some familiar faces, introducing them to the newest member of our family, and, most importantly, celebrating everyone with an August birthday.

We always enjoy getting to spend time with the residents, and this visit was an especially fun one. A little cake, plenty of laughs, and getting to introduce them to our daughter made for a pretty great afternoon.
