Healthy Vision Habits for Kids

When it comes to myopia, little everyday habits can really add up. A few small changes at home can help support healthier eyes and reduce strain as kids grow and learn.

Here are some easy habits that can help protect your child’s vision:

👀 Try the 20-20-20 rule
Every 20 minutes, have your child look 20 feet away for 20 seconds, especially during homework, reading, or screen time.

🌳 Make outdoor time a priority
More time outside has been linked to a lower risk of myopia progression in children. Fresh air + healthy eyes is a win-win.

📱 Take breaks from screens
Long stretches of close-up screen use can be hard on growing eyes. Regular breaks can help reduce eye strain and fatigue.

💡 Use good lighting
Whether they’re reading, coloring, or doing homework, good lighting can help make visual tasks easier on the eyes.

😴 Don’t underestimate sleep
Well-rested kids tend to have healthier bodies, and healthier eyes too.

👓 Stay on top of eye exams
Kids’ vision can change quickly, and many won’t realize they aren’t seeing clearly. Regular eye exams help catch changes early and allow us to monitor for myopia progression if needed.

Healthy vision starts with healthy habits and it’s never too early to build them!

Introducing Stellest™ Lenses for Myopia Management

Did you know there are glasses designed not only to correct your child’s vision, but also help slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness)?

One of the newer options in myopia management, Essilor® Stellest™ lenses are specially designed glasses lenses that do more than just help kids see clearly, they’re made to help slow myopia progression as children grow.
Unlike traditional single vision glasses, Stellest lenses use a unique lens design that helps manage how light focuses in the eye while still providing clear, comfortable vision for everyday activities like school, sports, and screen time.

For many families, they’re a great option because:
-They look and feel like regular glasses
-Kids can wear them throughout the day
-They’re non-invasive and easy to adapt to
-They’re designed specifically for growing eyes
Stellest lenses are also FDA-approved in the United States for myopia management, giving parents another evidence-based option to consider when a child’s prescription is progressing.

Myopia management is not one-size-fits-all, but having more tools available means we can better personalize treatment for each child’s needs.
If your child’s prescription seems to be increasing every year, now is a great time to start the conversation about myopia management and whether Stellest lenses may be a good fit!

Myopia Awareness Week

If you wore thick glasses as a child, or have a high prescription now, your child may have a higher risk of developing myopia, too.

Nearsightedness often runs in families, and kids with one or both highly myopic parents tend to develop stronger prescriptions earlier in life. The tricky part is that vision changes can happen gradually, and many kids don’t even realize they aren’t seeing clearly yet. That’s why early eye exams are so important.

Catching myopia early gives us the chance to monitor how your child’s eyes are developing and talk about ways to help slow progression as they grow.

A few things parents might notice:
• Sitting very close to screens
• Holding books close to their face
• Squinting often
• Rubbing their eyes
• Frequent headaches

And honestly, some kids won’t complain at all because they think the way they see is normal.
A comprehensive eye exam can help catch small changes early, before they start affecting learning, school, or everyday activities.

Healthy vision now can make a big difference for their future.

Not all myopia treatment looks the same!

When a child becomes nearsighted, many parents assume stronger glasses each year are just part of growing up. But today, there are several different myopia management options that may help slow progression as kids grow.

The best treatment depends on your child’s age, prescription, eye growth, lifestyle, and comfort level, which is why myopia management is never one-size-fits-all!

Some common treatment options include:

👓 Specialized glasses lenses
Certain spectacle lens designs are made to help slow myopia progression while still providing clear everyday vision.

💧 Low-dose atropine eye drops
These prescription drops are often used at bedtime and may help slow how quickly myopia worsens over time.

🌙 Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)
Special overnight contact lenses gently reshape the front of the eye while sleeping, allowing kids to see clearly during the day without glasses or contacts.

✨ Soft myopia management contact lenses
Specialty soft contact lenses can help correct vision while also helping manage progression.

🌳 Lifestyle and visual habit changes
More outdoor time, screen breaks, and healthy visual habits can also play an important role in supporting eye health.

One of the biggest things parents should know: early intervention matters. The earlier myopia begins, the more time it has to progress — which is why monitoring children early is so important.

If your child’s prescription seems to change every year, or if there’s a family history of high myopia, it may be time to start the conversation!

Myopia Awareness Week

More and more kids are becoming nearsighted earlier than ever before. And while myopia may seem like “just needing glasses,” higher prescriptions can increase the risk of eye health problems later in life, including retinal issues, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

A few signs your child may be developing myopia:
• Squinting to see things far away
• Sitting very close to screens or the TV
• Holding books or tablets close to their face
• Saying the board at school looks blurry
• Frequent headaches or tired eyes

👀 The earlier myopia is detected, the better. Early treatment and monitoring can help slow progression and support healthier vision as kids grow. 👶 🧒 👧

If it’s been a while since your child’s last eye exam, this is a great reminder to schedule one.  We love helping families stay ahead of vision changes and keep little eyes healthy for the future.
