I AM UNMOTIVATED
I love Christmas. It is the only holiday I decorate for. I had been listening to Christmas music since before Thanksgiving, happily wrapping gifts and shopping for those that I love.
Now we are two weeks to Christmas and I am tired, unmotivated, annoyed, anxious and I am wondering, “what is going on with me?!” After a week of asking myself this, I finally am saying, “oh Heidi you idiot”. (I say that lovingly to myself by the way – I do have a dark sense of humor).
Let’s think about life in North Dakota lately:
--We had a winter storm followed by frigid temps and more coming in the forecast.
--I haven’t seen the sun in days.
--I have spent the last week shoveling my driveway and repeatedly hurting my back (lol, getting old sucks).
--I am rushing from warm place to warm place trying my best to avoid the unbearable weather.
--I haven’t spent any time with friends because it’s too cold for me to want to leave the warm house.
Do you see any problems with how me and a lot of other North Dakotans are spending our time? No wonder I feel unmotivated. Idiot! (again, I am saying that lovingly).
The weather SUCKS. Everything feels harder. I am sharing this because I want you to know you are not alone in the struggle and also because we gotta kick ourselves in the ass a little bit during this time.
To me and anyone else feeling unmotivated right now: Find one thing (at least) to do everyday that makes you feel good about yourself. It is going to feel hard to get yourself to do it, but remind yourself it is just one thing.
Here are some ideas:
1. Make yourself move and exercise, I know it sucks but it will make a big difference in how you feel about life and yourself. It doesn't have to be crazy, just enough to get your heart pumping a little.
2. Get a massage, facial, spa treatment, something to ease the muscle soreness from shoveling snow or being more sedentary than in the summer months.
3. Go for a walk - I know that sounds awful but if you bundle up for 10 minutes to breathe in fresh air, it makes a huge difference in our moods.
4. Make sure to eat at least one healthy meal a day.
5. Call a friend or family member you love to catch up.
