Did you know that speech therapists work with way more than just speech?

What exactly does that mean?

There have been so many times where I’ve heard patients say “I don’t need speech, I talk fine” or a caregiver calls and I ask what they’re seeking services for and they seem confused.

Speech therapy is all about communication. There are so many skills that we use to communicate and participate in everyday activities including attention, processing information, memory and problem solving.

Not only do we work with communication, but all the muscles used for speech and used for swallowing as well.

Did any of these areas surprise you?!

Not all changes are related to age like some people may think.

Forgetting words, losing your train of thought, struggling to follow conversations, or coughing when eating may sometimes be a sign that something deeper is going on.

Speech therapy can help support communication, cognition, confidence, swallowing and quality of life for individuals experiencing neurological changes.

If you’ve noticed these changes in yourself or a loved one, early support is the most important.

Are you or your loved one with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s speaking quieter?

Did you know many people with Parkinson’s will experience changes in their speech?

It might be slurred speech, change in quality of voice, low volume or even decrease in breath support. Speech therapy can help patients speak clearer with various exercises or techniques.

Join me on Thursdays at 1 pm in May for a 6 week series to learn more about how Parkinson’s can impact speech!

Expanding on my post about the left vs. right hemisphere — let’s now take a look at the different lobes of the brain. 💭

🧠 The frontal lobe is the largest lobe with the most responsibilities, including higher level cognitive abilities such
as attention, problem-solving, decision-making and planning. It’s also responsible for producing language and emotional regulation.

🧠 The parietal lobe is responsible for interpreting our 5 senses, as well as recognizing where objects are in space, along with math and writing skills.

🧠 The temporal lobe is responsible for understanding and comprehending language, as well as memory.

🧠 The occipital lobe is all things vision and visual processing.

When there is damage to one or more lobes of brain, such as in a stroke or brain injury, everyday tasks can become much harder. That’s where therapy comes in — to help the brain build new pathways and skills.

Keep following along to learn about more parts of the brain!
