Super excited for the next program launching at Mind2Mouth Speech Therapy!

Real conversations happen in real places.

We know how hard it can be to go out into the community following a stroke due to communication difficulties.

Communication in the Community is a program built for people living with aphasia to practice real-world communication in real-world settings.

Functional communication means using your voice to order coffee, shop at the grocery store, socializing with friends over dinner.

šŸ“ Local group outings and real conversations can help rebuild confidence working on communication strategies in the real world

Many people hear ā€œspeech therapistā€ and think only verbally producing speech.

Speech is super important but it’s not the only way we communicate. šŸ’¬

For many of the patients we work with (stroke survivors, people living with Parkinson’s, and others navigating neurological changes), speech can become effortful or inconsistent. That doesn’t mean communication is impossible.

It might look like:
šŸ—£ļø A word, spoken slowly and with effort
šŸ“± An AAC device or communication board
āœļø A written note or text message
😊 A facial expression or eye gaze
šŸ‘‹ A gesture that says everything

As speech-language pathologists, our job isn’t just to help people talk — it’s to help them communicate, in whatever way works best for them.

If you or someone you love is navigating changes in communication, we’re here to help. šŸ’™

Caregivers — this one’s for you.

Communicating with a loved one who has dementia can feel heartbreaking. The person you know is still there. But reaching them takes a different kind of language.

Here are 5 small shifts that make a real difference āž”ļø

01 Ā· Short, simple sentences
02 Ā· Reduce background noise
03 Ā· One instruction at a time
04 Ā· Use their name & make eye contact
05 Ā· Enter their reality — don’t correct

šŸ’¬ If you’re supporting a loved one with dementia and have questions about communication or swallowing — we’re here. DM us anytime.

Aphasia is one of the most misunderstood conditions I treat.

People with aphasia are intelligent, aware, and present. They just can’t always access their words the way they used to.

If someone you love has had a stroke or brain injury, swipe through this post. Then share it with everyone in their life — because understanding changes everything.

Speech-language pathologists specialize in exactly this.

Reach out if you have questions. šŸ’™ šŸ“

Did you know that speech therapists work with way more than just speech?

What exactly does that mean?

There have been so many times where I’ve heard patients say ā€œI don’t need speech, I talk fineā€ or a caregiver calls and I ask what they’re seeking services for and they seem confused.

Speech therapy is all about communication. There are so many skills that we use to communicate and participate in everyday activities including attention, processing information, memory and problem solving.

Not only do we work with communication, but all the muscles used for speech and used for swallowing as well.

Did any of these areas surprise you?!

Not all changes are related to age like some people may think.

Forgetting words, losing your train of thought, struggling to follow conversations, or coughing when eating may sometimes be a sign that something deeper is going on.

Speech therapy can help support communication, cognition, confidence, swallowing and quality of life for individuals experiencing neurological changes.

If you’ve noticed these changes in yourself or a loved one, early support is the most important.
