Jelan Agnew, LCSW has been working in the field of social work for over 14+ years. She started working with at risk youth in North Philadelphia, while completing an undergraduate degree in Psychology and African American Studies at Temple University. While attending Temple University, she completed a 6 month course, “Drugs in America”,which took place in a Maximum Security Prison in Philadelphia and consisted of 15 Temple University students and 15 Inmates. While at Temple University, she also did study abroad at the University of Ghana to complete her degree. After graduation, she worked in Harlem and the Bronx coordinating services for adults with mental health and substance abuse issues. She returned to Connecticut and attended the University of Connecticut School of Social Work, to complete an Masters in Social Work (MSW) degree. Working primarily with Hartford youth, her experience includes MDFT In-home therapy, work in residential and group homes, work in an alternative high school, a 28 day rehab program and almost 5 years at the Institute of Living at Hartford hospital. During her time at the Institute of Living (IOL), Jelan worked in the Extended Day Treatment Program providing group, family and individual therapy to Hartford youth of color. In addition, at the IOL, she worked in the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Intensive Outpatient Program, providing DBT groups, family and individual therapy to adults with Borderline Personality Disorder. Jelan has advanced DBT training, which she completed with the noted Dr. Charlie Swenson. During her time in the field, she has worked with clients who struggle with depression, anxiety, mood disorder, behavioral disorders, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attachment issues, substance abuse issues, borderline personality disorder etc… In addition, at IOL, she provided clinical supervision to MSW’s seeking their clinical licensure. In 2017, Jelan started a private practice called "Nalej of Self”, (pronounced knowledge of self), which she now runs full time. Nalej of Self’s mission is dedicated to healing communities of color. In this, she works on addressing generational trauma, identifying cycles/patterns and creating new ways of being through healing Mind, Body and Spirit. She is a Reiki Practitioner, and enjoys exploring non-traditional means of healing. Nalej of Self provides individual, family and group therapy; Mindfulness/ Meditation and custom Workshops (based on the needs of the client); Day retreats and several other services. She has provided Workshops for Crec school teachers, The University of Massachusetts for young women of color ages 14-18, El Noel Wellness In Brooklyn, NY, AFCAMP, and in Atlanta, Georgia. Also, while working at Nalej of Self, she participated in the Basic Latina podcast, participated in a community conversation about mental health for communities of color on 94.3FM, on a special with CUNY schools with Mike Gilliam, and participated in a Documentary about anxiety on CPTV/PBS called “Uncertainty”. Additionally, Jelan is an adjunct professor at Eastern Connecticut State University, teaching “Intro to Social Work”. In 2020, she will be presenting at the National Association of Black Social Work Conference, discussing generation trauma in the black community. Jelan loves the reciprocal energy of working with and helping to heal such amazing folks. She refers to her clients as having “Magical Minds”, as a means to destigmatize the language around mental health diagnoses. Jelan is passionate about healing and works hard to serve her community.
