Here is a sneak peek into one of our therapy sessions! This client has been working hard mastering his /sh/ and /v/ sounds. Since he has been 100% accurate in structured settings, we moved practice to play! He is so close to completing his goals. Play is a fantastic tool for practicing language and speech skills. It also brings out so much fun and laughter❤️.

Rapport building is the foundation of everything we do in speech therapy! Clients have to feel comfortable, safe, and encouraged in order to practice their speech and language. Rapport building is also fun! It is such a gift to get to know our clients and their families well.

The imagination of a client paired with the targeted speech sounds from the SLP means endless opportunities to practice speech. Today we had a village with a rogue ice cream truck that craSHed into some buSHes, requiring a construCION site to make repairs.

The best way to get a child engaged in speech is to follow their lead! Speech and language can be used in virtually any setting, so why not let the child choose? As SLPs we can join them in what they are doing and help facilitate play that addresses their specific goals. Working on the /l/ sound? Let’s play spaceships and Land on different pLanets or do fLips without gravity. Of course, sometimes we have to stop playing to teach the specific placement of the articulators or do a short activity at the table to learn something new with language, but after that, it is important to use what they learned in the environment where they will use it the most...PLAY!

Are you ever nervous about bringing your child somewhere because you don’t know how they will behave? You don’t need to feel that way coming to speech! We love every one of our clients and we are not flustered by big emotions or challenging moments. We know that when things happen, your child is trying to communicate something to us and we are all ears.

Did you know there are 2 different ways to make the R sound?

Retroflex R
– The tip of the tongue curls back toward the roof of the mouth
– Sides of the tongue touch the upper molars
– Feels like a little “hook” shape

Bunched R

– The tongue tip stays down or neutral
– The middle of the tongue bunches up toward the palate
– Feels wider and more “compact”

During speech therapy, we try both ways and see which one works best. Try saying the R sound and see which way you say it!
