I heard a talk at Intercity given by Peter W Plants about growing fat caudex plants. I became obsessed with growing cissus tuberosa, which Peter grows magnificently. I told him I needed one. I think he saw the deranged look in my eyes. I really needed to have one. He had seen it somewhere at the Intercity sale, so we walked around together looking. He asked a friend where it was, and there was cissus bliss.

Part of the vine rooted outside of the pot!

It loves to wander and that’s just fine by me and the plants.

Exposed caudex. Roots are very healthy on limited drip watering.

Thanks Peter for sharing your amazing plant wisdom. I brought the plant home and realized that those leafs were very familiar. Hiding under one of my benches was a plant that I had planted a couple of years ago. I forgot about it because the pot hides under the bench. The vine grows upwards and became a bit of a monster last year with aerial bulbs. I wonder if it began with Peter. He is a major wholesale producer. On a whim I transplanted to a larger vessel. There was a healthy caudex forming under the soil. I red buried it and cut the vine back to the caudex. I’m hoping it will sprout more vine this year. I’m giving soil to some of the aerial bulbs. They seem to root easily. This may be my new favorite caudiciform plant!

This is the caudex reburied.

This will get a pot soon.

Adenia perrieri. This was fully leafed a week before Intercity. I planned to bring it to the show, but sadly I underestimated how much water was needed.

The plant wilted and went into shock. After some rest and a little water it is waking up again.

This happened once before when I had to travel for work. This plant seems to tolerate if not need consistent water.

I will cut it back soon to propagate. I currently have two plants from one original from Intercity 2025. Maybe I convince it to make a caudex?! I will show it Cissus tuberosa and say do this! 🤣

Espostoa melanostele from Planet Desert 2024, maybe earlier. I always grew this in a bonsai rectangle pot with various other succulents.

It was one of my first experiments in growing succulents. Thankfully they all tolerated winter rain and my less skilled watering practice back then. This year I transplanted into a vessel from [email protected]

I kept the hawworthia and sempervivum. They were always happy together.

I did the transplant when the vessel arrived from Keith before Intercity. They were too unstable to travel. Maybe next year they will take a ride to Arcadia.

I’m looking forward to see how they grow here.

Neobuxbaumia polylopha Cristata. This came from Planet Desert in 2024. It doubled or tripled in size since then. I found early on that the young plants of this species burn easily so I gave bright indirect light primarily. I transplanted it into a new vessel.

I was surprised that the plant survived because the soil was very organic compared with what I currently use. It took some time using chopsticks, a spray bottle and the hose to get all the organic matter off of the roots. But I got most of it out. I’m preparing for a wet rainy season.

This Decarya madagascariensis was a huge bush when I acquired it over a year ago. It had no pruning scars that I could see. This year I gave more shade than previous years and it responded with vigorous growth of new branches. I decided to give it a respectable home and did some trimming to expose the two trunks. The tree is wired in place for stability. I’m hoping to get an SUV to better transport plants. The journey to Intercity 2027 has already begun!

Greenovia dodrantalis, recently reclassified as Aeonium dodrantale. I saw this offered at the Intercity show and fell in love. During summer the leafs form a tight bud to conserve water. It will open during the fall-spring growing season.

Kalanchoe beharensis Mature plants with pups. I transplanted into a slightly larger container this spring. I love the lush felt texture of these leaves. They are very water sensitive. Too much water and dark spots form on the leafs. The stem of each plant will grow upwards and towards light. By tilting the container it is possible to create interesting curves in the trunk. The trunk is fairly rigid. I haven’t attempted to shape these with wiring.

Larry Thomsen I’m very pleased with the color harmony between this mammillaria bocasana and your vessel. It seems the judges liked it too!
