It seems like such a simple test, but it gives me valuable information during a physical therapy evaluation.
I'm not just looking at your balance.
Can you stand equally well on both legs?
Does your pelvis stay level?
How are your hips, trunk, core and ankles supporting you?
These movement patterns matter need to be looked at especially if you are having PT at your pelvic floor, or being evaluated postpartum after having babies or years afterwards.
When your body lacks stability, it may compesate in different ways. For some people, the pelvic floor muscles become overactive or tighten in an attempt to provide additional support. Over time, these compensation patterns can contribute to symptoms like:
• Pelvic pain, back or hip pain
• Pain with s*x • Leaking p*e or 💩
This is why pelvic floor physical therapy is about so much more than doing Kegels or treating one muscle. It is about understanding how your entire body moves so we can address the root cause—not just the symptoms.
