Parenting comes with moments that can leave us wondering:

"Why does my child do that?"

While it's natural to focus on the behavior itself, it can be helpful to consider what the behavior is trying to tell you.
Sometimes a child may be seeking connection, avoiding something difficult, trying to access a favorite item or activity, or responding to a sensory experience.

Understanding the "why" behind behavior doesn't mean having all the answers—it starts with becoming curious.

🌱 This week, try asking yourself:

"What might my child be trying to communicate?"

That simple shift in perspective can open the door to greater understanding, connection, and support.

💬 What is one behavior that makes you stop and wonder, "Why does my child do that?"

💡 ABA Spotlight: Why Behavior Happens

Have you ever wondered why a behavior keeps happening? 🤔

In ABA, we recognize that behavior is often a form of communication. Every behavior serves a purpose and may communicate a need, want, feeling, or experience.

Understanding the "why" behind behavior can help us move beyond reacting to behavior and begin understanding what a child may be communicating.

When families understand the purpose behind behavior, they are better equipped to support communication, learning, independence, and meaningful progress.

Throughout this week, we'll be sharing simple insights to help families better understand the "why" behind behavior.

💬 What is one behavior you've been trying to better understand lately?
We'd love to hear from you in the comments.

✨ Can You Spot the Generalization? ✨

One important goal of ABA is not only to teach a skill, but to help that skill transfer across different people, places, and situations.

This is called generalization.

In this post, you'll see a few examples of what generalization can look like in everyday life—from requesting help at home to taking turns at the playground and greeting others at school.

These everyday moments show how learned skills can be used beyond therapy and become part of daily life.

💬 What skill has surprised you by showing up outside of therapy?

✨ 3 Ways to Help Skills Transfer to Everyday Life ✨

Learning a skill is important, but helping that skill carry over to everyday situations is just as important.

One important goal of ABA is to support generalization—the ability to use learned skills across different people, places, and situations.

Here are three simple ways families can help support skill generalization at home:
✔ Practice in different places
✔ Practice with different people
✔ Practice during everyday routines
Small opportunities throughout the day can help children practice and use skills across everyday situations.

💬 What is one skill your child has started using in more places or with more people recently?

✨ ABA Term Spotlight: Generalization ✨

Learning a skill is just the beginning. One of the most important goals of ABA is helping skills transfer beyond teaching sessions and into everyday life.
In ABA, this is called generalization.

Generalization occurs when a child uses a learned skill across different people, environments, and situations. Whether it is requesting help at home, following directions at school, or communicating with peers in the community, generalization helps make learning meaningful and practical.

When skills are used across everyday settings, children have more opportunities to build independence, participate in daily activities, and apply what they have learned in real-life situations.

💬 What is one skill your child has started using independently at home, school, or in the community?

Consistency matters in ABA therapy.

Steady, structured support can help create opportunities for learning, participation, communication, and skill development across daily routines and environments.

Consistent care may support:
• Predictable routines
• Skill practice across settings
• Ongoing data collection
• Continuity in treatment implementation
• Collaboration between caregivers and the clinical team

At Brite ABA, our approach focuses on individualized, evidence-based care guided by clinical observation, ongoing assessment, and meaningful collaboration with families.

Every child’s needs are different, and treatment recommendations are based on individualized clinical evaluation and medical necessity.
