Eating disorders do not have an age limit. While they’re often portrayed as only affecting teenagers or young adults, people of all ages can struggle — including later in life.

Harmful stereotypes can make it harder for adults to seek help, leaving many to believe they should’ve “grown out of it” or aren’t “sick enough” to deserve care.

Recovery is possible at any age, and no one is ever “too old” to ask for support. 💙

Body checking behaviors can become so normalized that many people don’t even realize how often they’re doing them. From constantly checking mirrors or photos to comparing your body to others or monitoring how clothes fit, these habits are often rooted in anxiety, perfectionism, or a need for reassurance and control.

While body checking may temporarily relieve distress, over time it can increase obsessive thoughts, worsen body image, and make it harder to feel present or at peace in your body. What may seem like “small” habits can quietly take up significant mental and emotional space.

If you’re struggling, you deserve support and compassion — not shame. 💙

Eating disorders are about so much more than food. Anxiety, OCD, perfectionism, and the pressure to feel “in control” can all play a significant role in the development and maintenance of eating disorders.

What may appear as discipline or routine on the outside can often be intense fear, intrusive thoughts, emotional distress, or feelings of never being “good enough” beneath the surface. Recovery is not just about changing behaviors — it includes healing the underlying struggles and rebuilding trust, flexibility, and self-worth. 💙

Sometimes the most well-intended comments can have an unintended impact.

Appearance-focused compliments may feel complicated for someone navigating eating disorder recovery, body image concerns, or changes in their health.

Swipe through for supportive alternatives that help keep the focus on the person—not their appearance.

This Pride Month, we’re partnering with to honor and uplift the LGBTQ+ community while raising awareness around the disproportionate impact eating disorders have within this space. LGBTQ+ individuals — especially transgender and nonbinary youth — experience significantly higher rates of eating disorders, yet many still face barriers to affirming, inclusive care.

Everyone deserves support that recognizes and respects their full identity. Healing spaces should be safe, compassionate, and accessible for all. 🌈💙

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is here.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Meet Nic 💛

Nic Coppage is a Helpline Therapist at The Alliance and a social worker based in Florida. Their lived experience helps inform the compassionate support they provide to our community.

Nic’s favorite part of their work is connecting with members of The Alliance’s LGBTQ+ community and helping individuals feel seen, validated, and supported.

Outside of work, you can find Nic learning new songs on guitar, reading from their ever-growing TBR pile, or spending time with their roommate’s cat, Ludo 🐱 We’re so grateful for the care, advocacy, and resilience they bring to The Alliance every day 💛

Eating disorders are not defined by a number on a scale. “Atypical” anorexia nervosa includes the same restrictive behaviors, medical risks, and psychological distress as anorexia nervosa — yet weight stigma often delays recognition, diagnosis, and care.

Someone does not need to be medically classified as “underweight” to be struggling or deserving of support. Malnutrition, emotional distress, and serious health complications can happen at any body size.

Everyone deserves access to compassionate, informed care. 💙
