You may be lying completely still, but while you sleep, your body is incredibly busy. 😴✨
Sleep isn’t simply a period when your body “shuts off” for the night. Different stages of sleep allow your brain and body to carry out important processes that help you recover from one day and prepare for the next.
Here’s some of what’s happening while you sleep:
🧠 Your brain is organizing what you learned. Sleep plays an important role in processing information and consolidating memories, helping your brain sort through and strengthen what you experienced throughout the day.
💪🏻 Your body is repairing and recovering. During sleep, your body supports tissue repair and releases hormones involved in growth and recovery. This is especially important after physical activity, injury, and the normal wear and tear of everyday life.
🧹 Your brain is clearing metabolic waste. The lymphatic system helps move fluid through brain tissue and clear metabolic byproducts, and this process appears to become more active during sleep.
🛡️ Your immune system is still hard at work. Sleep and immune function are closely connected. While you rest, your body continues coordinating immune activity and producing signaling molecules involved in immune response.
⚖️ Your hormones are following their natural rhythms. Sleep influences the release and regulation of hormones involved in appetite, metabolism, growth, stress, and energy.
All of this is also happening under the direction and coordination of your nervous system, which continues regulating essential functions even while you’re completely unaware of them!
This is one reason quality sleep is such an important part of overall health and recovery. And it’s also why we care about nervous system function in chiropractic! Supporting healthy brain-body communication gives your body a strong foundation for doing what it was designed to do around the clock.
So while it may look like you're doing absolutely nothing for eight hours, your body would strongly disagree. 🤍
