Today, on National Cancer Survivors Day, I’m reflecting on just how honored I am to be surrounded by such an incredible community of people.
Every week—and for some, every single day—I have the privilege of connecting with friends who have survived a diagnosis of cancer, friends who are currently navigating a diagnosis of cancer, and families walking this journey alongside someone they love. It is a community filled with courage, resilience, and hope.
For me, this day is especially personal. My own daughter is a survivor of childhood cancer, and watching her face challenges no child should ever have to endure changed me forever.
One thing I’ve learned through these relationships is that a diagnosis of cancer impacts far more than the body. Whether someone is newly diagnosed, in treatment, or years into survivorship, the mental and emotional impact can last a lifetime. The fear, anxiety, grief, uncertainty, trauma, and adjustments don’t simply disappear when treatment ends or when someone reaches the milestone of survivorship.
That’s why I’m passionate about continuing conversations around mental health and reducing stigma. Every person deserves a safe place to talk about what they’re carrying. Every person deserves support, understanding, and connection. Every person deserves to know they are not alone.
To my friends who are navigating a diagnosis of cancer, to those who have survived a diagnosis of cancer, and to the families standing beside them—thank you for allowing me to walk alongside you. It is an honor to support you, encourage you, and remind you of what is true:
You are brave.
You are strong.
You are worthy of support.
And you never have to face this alone.
May we all take the time to recognize the lasting mental health impact that can follow a diagnosis of cancer and continue showing up for one another with compassion, understanding, and hope.
Because no matter what storm you are facing, there is always hope in the chaos.
