Barbara graduated from Wyomissing High School, and worked for many years with the Long Insurance Agency in Reading, PA, as a secretary / bookkeeper. Growing up in Wyomissing, she and her mother attended Atonement Lutheran Church, developing several friendships there.

She also became very involved in the church, helping along with other women for various receptions, and she also enjoyed spending time when she could with the church quilter group.
She was a good seamstress, but her preferred pastime was knitting and she was able to do some complex knitting projects, blending different colored yarns to form patterns. When younger she enjoyed ice skating. She also was an avid gardener and enjoyed planting flowers and maintaining the flower beds, as well as tending to a small vegetable garden.
