TW: Neonatal Resuscitation

As midwives, we are trained to resolve complications, like in this photo story. Here you’ll see Midwife Sam assisting a newborn with their first breaths following a shoulder dystocia (the head is born, but the shoulders delay the rest of the birth).

Midwife Sam begins providing initial breaths via mouth-to-mouth as this baby boy was not showing reassuring signs of their lungs transitioning after birth. She did this without hesitation as Midwife Jenna retrieved a bag-mask tool that can also be used to inflate a newborn’s lungs. After a few breaths, Midwife Sam moved to using the bag-mask and he started grimacing, squirming, and quickly letting out a nice loud cry. You can see both Midwife Jamie and Sam working as a team to help him transition into breathing.

While true complications are rare, we routinely practice the skills needed to keep moms and babies safe. We prefer to be hands-off immediately after the birth, allowing the baby to be skin to skin right away, but in this situation it was clear to our team that he needed some extra help. These observations and assessments occur within less than 1 minute of the baby being born.

The look on Midwife Sam's face says it all as this sweet boy makes his first cries. Just after he turned 1 minute old, he was ready to be returned to his mama for her embrace.

While this isn't the first time Midwife Sam needed to use her skills, it was the first time she provided mouth-to-mouth with a baby. She will always remember how it felt to exchange her breath and energy with his - it was truly remarkable.

This family was grateful for our quick and respectful response to their baby’s needs, exclaiming, "thank you for being our son's first kiss"!

Today, we celebrate the incredible strength, love, and care of mothers everywhere — the ones who raised us, the ones raising future generations, and the ones who mother in ways that don’t always get named.

To the birth moms, adoptive moms, stepmoms, grandmas, chosen moms, foster moms, and mentors — your impact is immeasurable, and your love, powerful.

We also hold space for those for whom today brings tenderness,l To those navigating this day with a quiet ache in their hearts — we see you, we honor you, and we send love your way.

And to the aunties, teachers, friends, caregivers, and nurturers who show up with mothering love even without the title — thank you. You matter deeply.

This slideshow holds just a small glimpse into the beauty we’ve had the privilege of witnessing over the last year — alongside a few pieces of our own journeys into motherhood, too. We know not every family feels comfortable sharing photos publicly, and we want you to know that whether or not you are pictured here, you are deeply cherished and admired. ✨💗

Whatever today holds for you, may you feel held in love, connection, and belonging. Happy Mother’s Day from our hearts to yours.

Happy International Day of the Midwife to the three midwives who have been inseparable since 2021.

Here is a glimpse of us outside of births and visits. Being a midwife isn't just about feeling bellies, catching babies, and weighing newborns.

There is so much unseen - late nights organizing bags, answering emails, triaging calls, marketing, coordinating care and resources, networking, and recharging after those long nights awake witnessing births take place.

Solo midwifery is not for the faint of heart. Sharing the mundane parts is almost as meaningful as the most exciting parts.

The Solstice Team is grateful to have each other and to have a relationship that extends far beyond a normal 9-to-5. It makes our ability to show up as midwives more meaningful, present, and, honestly, fun!

Thank you to all the families who continue to trust the three of us!

Midwife Jamie is spending this rainy night brushing up on her Basic Life Support skills! As midwives, we maintain our Basic Life Support (BLS) certification alongside our Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certification—because caring for both birthing families means being ready for anything.

Today’s training is a reminder that staying sharp isn’t optional—it’s part of the promise we make to every family we serve. 🫶

Hot tip! Target runs a bi-annual car seat trade-in event (typically in April and September). You can bring in expired, damaged, or unwanted car seats and bases for recycling, and in return you’ll get a 20% off coupon valid on car seats and strollers. The current event is happening now and runs through May 2.

From a practical standpoint, car seats are notoriously difficult to dispose of safely, so this can be a useful opportunity to declutter if you have one sitting around unused.

On the flip side, if you’re in need of a car seat or stroller, you might consider posting in your local Buy Nothing group. Sometimes people have extras they’re looking to pass along, which you could use to participate in the trade-in and receive the coupon.

I want to acknowledge that for many people, shopping at Target can bring up complicated feelings given the company’s impact on the broader community in recent months and years. You don’t have to make a purchase in order to recycle a carseat. Everyone will make the choice that feels right for them—this is simply information for those who may want to participate.

Have you ever wondered what it looks like to set up the birth tub at a home birth? This time-lapse clip shows us setting up one of our inflatable birth tubs—compressed into about a minute, but in real time, it takes less than 10 minutes from start to finish.

For this setup, we’re using a generic liner, which works well and gets the job done. That said, Birth Pool in a Box does offer a custom-fit liner designed specifically for this tub—and it truly fits like a glove.

While we do have a few different tub options available, this is the style we use most often. It’s reliable, spacious, and creates a comfortable environment for labor and birth!
