Today is Coast Guard Day, a day that commemorates the U.S. Coast Guard turning 236 years old. The brave men and women of this branch of the military service put their lives on the line every day as they protect the vast waters of our nation. For this, we are grateful.

For families, August is time to think about going back to school. For others, it's a good time to think about the increase in traffic around schools as well as buses and children and parents walking around your neighborhood. Keep school hours in mind, with 7-9am and 2:30-4:30 pm as the most active hours around most schools. Slow down, leave a good distance, and watch for pedestrians as the school season starts up!

Pack a healthy snack for a visit to the park this weekend, and raise a glass to celebrate someone who loved or loves nature!

Here's a simple guide:
1. Fruit — choose your favorite cooling fruit in season, such as watermelon, sweet cherries
2. Cheese — find a lower fat and sodium option in goat cheese or swiss cheese
3. Crackers — find the "hint of salt" square crackers
4. Nuts — unsalted walnuts, peanuts and pistachios are better choices
5. Beverage — make your own flavored water with cucumber and lots of ice

Pack your selections in an insulated bag along with your picnic blanket, and find a shady spot where you can soak in the summer with refreshments!

This month is noted as both Picnic Month and Grilling Month. Do you have a preference? Would you rather stay home and tend the grilling of meats and veggies, or pack up a light meal for a picnic in the park? Either one is a great way for older adults and families to get together.
