🧠 What is Executive Functioning?

Executive functioning is like the brain's command center—it helps us plan, stay organized, manage emotions, solve problems, and control our behavior. These skills are essential for learning, communicating, and navigating everyday life.

When a child has difficulties with executive functioning, they may:
• Become easily frustrated
• Have trouble organizing their thoughts
• Struggle to follow routines or multi-step directions
• Act impulsively or have difficulty with self-control

The good news? These skills can be strengthened with the right support.

Speech-language pathologists don't just work on speech—we also help children build executive functioning skills through strategies that improve organization, self-regulation, problem-solving, and communication.

Supporting executive functioning today can help build confidence, independence, and success at home, in school, and beyond. 💙

🗣️ How Do We Produce Speech?

Speech may seem effortless, but it actually requires the coordination of three important systems working together:

💨 Breathing – Provides the airflow needed for speech. Air is inhaled into the lungs and then exhaled to power sound production.

🎤 Phonation – Happens at the vocal folds (vocal cords). As air passes through, the vocal folds vibrate, creating sound.

👄 Articulation – Shapes those sounds into words. The tongue, lips, jaw, and palate work together to produce clear speech sounds.

When breathing, phonation, and articulation are all working together, exhaled air is transformed into the speech we use every day to communicate!

👀 What should you look for when it comes to early communication?

Gestures are one of the easiest ways to see how a child's communication skills are developing. While every child develops at their own pace, gestures like pointing, showing, waving, and reaching help lay the foundation for future language growth.

🚩 Consider talking with a pediatrician or speech-language pathologist if your child:
• Rarely points by 12–15 months
• Makes limited eye contact during interactions
• Doesn't show objects to others
• Has few attempts to communicate wants or interests
• Is delayed in both gestures and spoken language

The good news? You can encourage gestures throughout everyday routines!

✨ Wave goodbye
✨ Point to things you see together
✨ Read books and point to pictures
✨ Create opportunities for your child to request favorite items
✨ Follow your child's interests and talk about what they're looking at

Those tiny waves, points, and reaching arms are doing more than they seem—they're helping children connect, communicate, and learn.

If you have questions about your child's communication development, we'd love to help. 💙

Did you know gestures are one of the earliest signs of communication? 👋👉

Before children say their first words, they're already communicating through pointing, waving, clapping, reaching, showing objects, and more!

Research shows that children who use gestures more often tend to develop stronger language skills and larger vocabularies later on. In fact, gestures often come BEFORE words.

✨ The takeaway: Those little gestures are a big deal! They help build the foundation for future language development.

If you're not seeing these early communication skills emerge, or if you have concerns about your child's speech and language development, we'd love to help. Early support can make a big difference! 💙

School may be out, but speech and language practice doesn’t have to be! ☀️📚

The best part? Summer learning doesn’t need flashcards or worksheets. Practice speech sounds at the park, build vocabulary on nature walks, narrate everyday activities, and read together whenever you can.

Small moments add up to big progress. 🌻💬
