Precision Chiropractic West - West Des Moines Dr. Laurel Griffin
West Des Moines Chiropractor
Atlas Orthogonal Technique
2501 Westown Pkwy. Suite Your spine will be studied in depth.

Your Atlas Orthogonal doctor will perform a series of examinations and X-rays to determine if you are a candidate for Atlas Orthogonal care. The doctor will evaluate the extent of damage to joints, the specific angles of misalignment, and measure the joint surface shapes and angles. These measurements allow the AO doctor to calculate the exact vectors needed to correct your misalignment completely

and gently. The Atlas Orthogonal Percussion Adjusting Instrument uses 6 lbs. of percussive force to perform the adjustment and precisely realign the atlas vertebra within its normal range of motion. This means you will feel no twist, pop, or pain while the adjustment takes place. If the vectors used in the adjustment are correct, pain and irritation in the adjacent structures will be removed almost instantly. After the initial adjustment has been delivered, post X-rays will be taken. These will show the immediate changes made to your spine, including changes made to spinal curves, disc spaces, and alignment of the bones. They also tell the doctor if the adjusting vectors are correct, or if they can be improved upon. You will be shown these results. The stabilizing structures of the neck will never be as strong as they were prior to misalignment. For this reason, the atlas may not hold in place for long periods of time at first. A series of frequent adjustments may be needed in the early stages of care to allow healing and stabilization of the joint. Once the joint has sufficiently healed and stabilized, the atlas will stay in alignment the majority of the time. Frequent adjustments are not needed after healing has taken place. Periodic maintenance examinations by an Atlas Orthogonal chiropractor are necessary to ensure continued alignment and results. There is one diagnostic test that reveals the kind of injury static MRIs and CT scans routinely miss — and there is exactly one place in Iowa where you can get it.

Digital Motion X-Ray (DMX) is a video X-ray that records the spine as it actually moves. It identifies ligamentous instability, aberrant motion patterns, missed fractures, and compromised capsular ligaments that do not show up on standard imaging. It follows the AMA Guides for impairment, which makes the findings measurable and defensible — whether the case is clinical or medical-legal.

Precision Chiropractic West operates the only DMX imaging center in Iowa. Patients, attorneys, and referring providers come here from across the state and from surrounding states because there is no other option in the region.

If your chronic pain has gone unexplained, or if a case needs objective documentation of soft tissue injury, this is often the piece of the picture that has been missing.

Not every chiropractor is right for every case.

For a simple, acute back tweak, almost any office will do the job. For a chronic condition, a traumatic history, or unexplained neurological symptoms, the choice matters more than most patients realize.

Here are the five questions to ask before you pick a chiropractor in West Des Moines:
1. What is the diagnostic process on the first visit?
2. What credentials does the doctor hold beyond the DC?
3. Does the practice have advanced imaging capability?
4. What does the adjustment itself look like?
5. How does the practice talk about risk?

The full guide is on our site. If you have been through providers before without getting answers, this one is for you.

Dr. Laurel Griffin had her first migraine at age 10. By her late teens they were constant — including one three-month migraine that never broke.

She tried everything. Nothing worked. Until someone finally looked at her upper cervical spine.
She has not had a migraine since 2002.

For many chronic migraine patients in the Des Moines area, the trigger is not in the brain — it is in the neck. The atlas vertebra sits directly beneath the skull and surrounds some of the most critical neurovascular structures in the body. When it is misaligned, the result can look neurologically identical to a classic migraine. And preventive medications will not fix a mechanical problem.

The adjustment felt good. For a few days.
Then the pain came back. So you went back for another one. And another. And you started to wonder whether chiropractic is just not going to work for you.

Here is what most patients with chronic back pain are never told: the lower back is often not the problem. It is carrying the problem. When the atlas — the vertebra at the top of the neck — is misaligned, the entire spine compensates downward. Adjusting the lower back treats the symptom. The compensation pattern stays, and the pain returns.

Dr. Laurel Griffin has been Board Certified in the Atlas Orthogonal technique since 2006. Her West Des Moines practice handles the chronic cases other approaches have not resolved.

Your MRI came back "normal." Your X-rays showed nothing. But you still cannot turn your head without pain every single day.

You are not imagining it. Static imaging can only see the spine at rest — and many of the injuries that cause chronic neck pain only show up when the spine is actually moving.

Precision Chiropractic West is home to the only Digital Motion X-Ray imaging center in Iowa. If your neck pain has gone unexplained after standard imaging, this is often the diagnostic step that changes the conversation.

Still struggling with severe sciatica after treating your lower back for years? It might be time to look... up. ⬆️

Your spine is a single, connected chain. If your head and upper neck are misaligned, your entire body has to compensate, which twists your framework and often pinches the sciatic nerve in your lower back. Our newest article explains why a top-down approach is often the missing link for lasting sciatica and lower back pain relief.

Leveraging extensive training in advanced biomechanics and over 19 years of clinical experience, we aim to correct these full-spine compensations without any guesswork.
