We donât order testing just to do it! It gives us great insight about the functionality of someone and whatâs areas we need to focus on! Before we recommend anything though, I try to ask myself some questions beforehandâŚ
1. âWill this test change what we do next?â
If the answer wonât affect treatment, lifestyle recommendations, monitoring, or referrals, the test may not be justified.
2. âIs this the right timing for the test?â
Hormones, cortisol, glucose, inflammatory markers, iron studies, and even thyroid markers can shift based on sleep, stress, illness, menstrual cycle, fasting status, exercise, and medications. Poor timing creates misleading data.
3. âWhat problem are we actually trying to solve?â
Are you screening, confirming a suspicion, tracking progress, ruling something out, or giving reassurance? Testing without a clear clinical question often leads to overtesting and confusing results.
We donât order testing just to look comprehensive, we do it be comprehensive and make better decisions!
