The Stages of Recovery
Perennial Recovery Center
Recovery is a journey, not a single event. Most people move through several stages as they work toward lasting sobriety and improved mental health. The widely accepted Stages of Change model includes:
1. Precontemplation – “I don’t have a problem.”
At this stage, a person may not recognize that their substance use is causing problems or may not be ready to make changes. Family, friends, or legal issues often encourage them to seek help.
2. Contemplation – “Maybe I need help.”
The individual begins to recognize the impact of substance use and starts weighing the pros and cons of change. They may feel unsure or ambivalent about taking the next step.
3. Preparation – “I’m ready to make a change.”
A commitment to recovery begins. This may include researching treatment options, talking to loved ones, attending support meetings, or enrolling in a program.
4. Action – “I’m actively working on my recovery.”
This is when real behavioral change occurs. Individuals participate in treatment, develop coping skills, attend groups, build support systems, and work toward sobriety.
5. Maintenance – “I’m building a new life.”
Recovery becomes part of daily life. The focus shifts to maintaining healthy habits, preventing relapse, strengthening relationships, and continuing personal growth.
6. Relapse or Recurrence – “A setback, not a failure.”
For some individuals, relapse may occur. Recovery is not always a straight line. A setback can be an opportunity to learn, reconnect with support, and continue moving forward.
