Public Law 94-142: Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 was remodeled and renamed Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA). Today we call it IDEA. The IEP was born out of this law. IEP is an acronym for Individual Education Plan. A student in school with a disability is entitled to an IEP. An IEP is a document which lists an education plan, separate from the general classroom education plan, for an individually named student. It must be followed through by specified staff including special education teachers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, behavior specialists, school psychologists, reading specialists, math specialists, and possibly others. The classroom teacher of the named student is required to follow any accommodations listed but are usually not named to implement specific goals and objectives related to the individual education plan. In addition to the specific education plan of goals and objectives for the named student to achieve, the document lists specific amounts of time the named student will be seen by specific specialist, i.e., reading teacher, speech pathologist, social communication specialist, other than their classroom teacher for specialized instruction, again, described within the document. The law requires that parents take part in developing this document with the school team on behalf of their child.

In 1975, Public law 94-142 was enacted and signed by President Gerald Ford. It was called Education for all Handicapped Children Act of 1975. Because, at the time, there were approximately eight million handicapped children in the United States whose educational needs were not being met and who were not receiving appropriate educational services. One million of those students did not even attend public school due to their handicap. This act is twenty four pages of fine print but what it essentially did was require the states to include all children in public education making it illegal to exclude any child based on their learning limitations. This act included "support" for the states in the form of money. Eventually, in 1990 this landmark law was remodeled and provided with a new name: Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act, or IDEA.

Sometimes, what looks like behaviour… is actually frustration with communication. 💬

If your child is struggling with anxiety, meltdowns, or social withdrawal, it may not just be emotional, it could be related to speech or language challenges underneath.

When kids can’t express themselves or fully understand what’s being asked of them, it can lead to overwhelm, frustration, and even low self-esteem.

A speech and language evaluation can help uncover what’s really going on and provide the right support. https://www.greatspeech.com/should-children-struggling-with-behavioral-health-also-have-a-speech-evaluation/
