🚨 Not every serious knee injury is an ACL tear.

USWNT and Gotham FC defender Emily Sonnett recently suffered a ruptured patellar tendon—a significant injury that, while less common than an ACL tear, can be just as challenging to recover from.

The patellar tendon connects your kneecap (patella) to your shinbone (tibia) and plays a vital role in straightening your knee. It’s essential for everyday movements like walking, climbing stairs, standing up from a chair, and athletic movements like running, jumping, and cutting.

When this tendon ruptures, people often experience:
• A sudden “pop” at the time of injury
• Immediate pain and swelling
• Difficulty or inability to straighten the knee
• Trouble walking or bearing weight
• A kneecap that may appear higher than normal

Most complete patellar tendon ruptures require surgical repair, followed by months of physical therapy. Rehabilitation focuses on restoring range of motion, rebuilding strength, improving balance and coordination, and gradually progressing back to daily activities and sport. Recovery requires patience, consistency, and a personalized plan to safely regain function.

While injuries like this can be devastating, the right treatment team and a structured rehabilitation program can help athletes and active individuals return to the activities they love.

We wish Emily Sonnett a successful surgery and a smooth recovery! 💙

Ignoring IT Band Syndrome? It Could Lead to More Than Just Knee Pain.

That nagging pain on the outside of your knee isn’t something to “push through.” While IT Band Syndrome often starts as a mild irritation, leaving it untreated can lead to bigger problems that keep you off the trails, field, or gym.

⚠️ Potential issues if IT Band Syndrome isn’t addressed:
• Chronic knee pain that limits everyday activities
• Hip pain from altered movement patterns
• Compensatory injuries in the ankle, foot, or opposite leg
• Reduced strength and stability in the hips and glutes
• Decreased running or walking performance
• Longer recovery times and a higher chance of recurring pain

The good news? IT Band Syndrome is often caused by underlying factors like muscle weakness, poor movement mechanics, or training errors—not just a “tight IT band.” Addressing the root cause early can help you recover faster and prevent future injuries.

Don’t let a small ache become a long-term problem. Your body performs best when everything works together.

IT BAND SYNDROME: WHAT’S REALLY CAUSING YOUR OUTER KNEE PAIN? 🏃‍♀️🦵

If you’re a runner, cyclist, or active individual, you may have experienced a sharp, aching, or burning pain on the outside of your knee. This is commonly referred to as Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS).

The iliotibial band, or IT band, is a thick band of connective tissue that runs along the outside of your thigh from your hip to your knee. When symptoms develop, the pain is often felt on the outside of the knee—especially during repetitive activities like running or cycling.

Common symptoms may include:
🔹 Pain on the outside of the knee
🔹 Pain that worsens with running, especially downhill
🔹 Pain during repetitive bending and straightening of the knee
🔹 Tenderness along the outside of the knee
🔹 Symptoms that improve with rest but return when activity resumes

But here’s the important part: the IT band itself may not be the root of the problem.

IT band syndrome can be influenced by several factors, including:
✔️ Sudden increases in training volume or intensity
✔️ Weakness or poor control of the hip and glute muscles
✔️ Changes in running mechanics
✔️ Limited strength or mobility throughout the lower extremity
✔️ Repetitive movement patterns
✔️ Training errors, such as adding too much mileage too quickly

Simply stretching or foam rolling the IT band may not address the underlying cause of your symptoms. Since the IT band is dense connective tissue, it cannot simply be “stretched out” like a typical muscle.

A physical therapist can evaluate your strength, mobility, movement patterns, training habits, and mechanics to help determine what may be contributing to your pain.

The goal isn’t just to get rid of the pain temporarily—it’s to understand why it started in the first place and create a plan to help you return to running and the activities you love with confidence. 💪

Experiencing pain on the outside of your knee? Don’t ignore it and hope it goes away. The right evaluation and treatment plan can help get you back to moving comfortably.

Dry needling is more than just symptom relief—it’s a targeted intervention aimed at addressing neuromuscular dysfunction and improving movement.
Current evidence suggests dry needling may help modulate pain, reduce muscle irritability, improve local circulation, and enhance range of motion. But the strongest outcomes occur when it’s integrated into a comprehensive rehabilitation program.
At Clarity Physical Therapy, dry needling is one tool within a multimodal approach that combines therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, neuromuscular re-education, and patient education to address the underlying contributors to pain and dysfunction.
Our goal isn’t just to help you feel better temporarily—it’s to restore function, optimize movement, and support long-term recovery. 💪🏻🌱

Hip pain isn’t something you should have to push through.
A hip labral tear occurs when the cartilage that helps stabilize and cushion your hip joint becomes damaged. This can lead to symptoms like deep groin pain, clicking or catching in the hip, stiffness, and discomfort during activities such as running, squatting, pivoting, or even sitting for long periods.
Labral tears can develop from sports, repetitive movements, structural issues like femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), or simply wear and tear over time. While surgery is sometimes necessary, many individuals find significant relief through physical therapy focused on improving mobility, strengthening the muscles that support the hip, and restoring proper movement patterns.
If you’re experiencing persistent hip pain, don’t ignore it. Early evaluation and treatment can help you get back to the activities you love and prevent further issues down the road.
📞 Contact Clarity Physical Therapy today to schedule an evaluation and take the first step toward moving better and feeling better.
