Most people will never fully understand the things first responders witness.

The car crashes, su***des, child abuse, the fatal fires.
The moments where someone’s worst day becomes part of your memory forever.

And yet, when chaos erupts, when fear takes over, when everyone else is running away - first responders run towards it.

They step into danger, tragedy, and uncertainty with courage and commitment, often carrying the weight of what they’ve seen long after the call is over.

Mr. Rogers said, “Look for the helpers.”
In the darkest moments, the helpers are often the ones answering the phone, wearing a badge, carrying a radio, riding in an engine or stepping out of a medic.

Thank you for showing up in humanity’s hardest moments.
Thank you for helping when others cannot.
Thank you for carrying burdens most people will never see.

You are the helpers.

Unfortunately the anti-police bias can be strong in the mental health field! Many with the false belief that law enforcement officers are inherently bias and with a deep lack of understanding of the profession.

Therapists must recognize this bias and refer to culturally competent clinicians who can provide appropriate care for a population with significant and unique mental health needs.

First responders, particularly law enforcement, know that there is help available that understands and can help with the load you carry - nonjudgmentally.

Police officers face high rates of trauma and su***de, yet many distrust therapists. Is the mental health field pushing away the people who need help most?
