Model, don’t correct

When your child makes a grammar mistake, simply repeat it back correctly — no pressure, no drilling

This is called a recast, and it helps kids learn grammar naturally

Examples:
• Child: “He run fast!” → You: “Yes, he runs fast!”
• Child: “I goed” → You: “You went!”

You’re teaching without making them feel wrong

Talk about what they are interested in!

When your child chooses the activity, their brain is more engaged (and language grows faster!)

Join their play and comment on what they’re doing!
• If they’re lining up cars → “So many cars! They’re going fast!”
• If they’re feeding a doll → “Baby is hungry. Eat eat eat!”

Following their lead = more engagement, more language, less frustration

Skip “What’s this?” all day long.

Kids learn language best when they hear it
Not when they’re tested

Instead of constant questions, describe what you see and what your child is doing

Examples:
• Instead of “What color is this?” → say, “A green frog!”
• Instead of “What’s he doing?” → say, “He’s jumping!”

Modeling reduces pressure and builds vocabulary in a natural way

Child says one word → you make it two!

This is one of the easiest ways to boost language at home!

When your child says a single word, repeat it back and add one more

Examples:
• Child: “Dog!” → You: “Big dog!”
• Child: “Up” → You: “Go up!”
• Child: “Milk” → You: “More milk?”

This keeps language natural and helps your child build longer sentences without pressure

Parents are often surprised to learn this...
More than just spoken words count as “words”!

- Gestures with intent
- Signs (“more”)
- Approximations (“nana” for banana)
- Sound effects (“uh-oh”)

All of these show meaningful communication and they absolutely count!
