Today marks 82 years since D-Day, when thousands of brave Allied soldiers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy in one of the most significant operations of the Second World War.
Many never made it home. They faced impossible odds, knowing the dangers ahead, yet stepped forward with extraordinary courage to defend freedom and help bring an end to tyranny.
Today, we remember not only those who gave their lives, but also the veterans who carried the memories of that day for the rest of their lives, and the families whose sacrifices continued long after the fighting stopped.
As the number of surviving D-Day veterans grows ever smaller, it becomes even more important that we keep their stories alive and ensure future generations never forget the price that was paid for the freedoms we enjoy today.
On this 82nd anniversary, we pause to remember their courage, honour their sacrifice, and give thanks for their service.
