We provide care when your family veterinarian is closed or your pet requires advanced surgical or medical care. We will let your pet's primary veterinarian know about your visit to our hospital and send our records to their office. Together, we will review the diagnosis and develop the most advantageous treatment plan for your pet.

Summer adventures are more fun when safety comes first ☀️🐾

Warmer weather can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, burned paw pads, dehydration, and other seasonal emergencies for pets. Before heading outside, make sure your pet has access to shade, fresh water, and cool surfaces to walk on.

A good rule of thumb: if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Try to plan walks during cooler morning or evening hours and always watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.

With a little extra caution, you can help your pet enjoy a safe and happy summer all season long ❤️

🚨 POV: Your favorite rehab doctor went on vacation… and your patient has officially filed a complaint. 😂🐶

Patient: “Where’s Dr. Palmer?” 👀
Us: “She’s on vacation.”
Patient: “Okay… but where is SHE?” 👀👀

Apparently, “Dr. Palmer is taking some well-deserved summer time off” was NOT an acceptable answer. 😂

So what did our Physical Rehab team do?

📸 Printed out an almost-life-sized picture of Dr. Jenny Palmer
🧸 Grabbed one of his FAVORITE toys
👩‍⚕️ Put Dr. Palmer on a tongue depressor
🚶‍♀️ And proceeded to walk “Dr. Palmer” into the treadmill room like this was a completely normal thing to do.

Because when your rehab patient refuses to see anyone but Dr. Palmer…

YOU BRING DR. PALMER TO HIM. 😂😂😂

Honestly, we’re not sure who was more committed to the bit—the patient or our rehab team. 🫣🐾

💙💜 HUGE shoutout to our AMAZING Physical Rehabilitation technicians and tech assistants for holding down the fort while Dr. Jenny Palmer enjoyed some very well-deserved summer vacation time!

Our Physical Rehab team works hard every day helping pets get stronger, more comfortable, and back to doing what they love—whether they're recovering from orthopedic surgery, an injury, a neurologic condition, or another reason rehabilitation may be recommended. 🐾💪

And apparently, we're also in the business of cardboard doctor impersonation when necessary. 😂

🐾👑 Happy Monday, It's National Spoil Your Dog Day! 👑🐾

Let’s be honest… some dogs don’t need National Spoil Your Dog Day because they already live like royalty. 😂🐶

But today is the perfect excuse to give your best friend a little extra love and some vet-approved pampering!

🛁 Spa Day: A bath, brushing session, nail trim, or a good ear scratch can make your pup feel fresh and fabulous.

🦴 Treats: Choose treats that are appropriate for your dog’s age, size, and health, and remember that treats should be given in moderation. You can even make enrichment more exciting with a food puzzle or stuffed toy using a portion of their regular diet.

🐕 Extra Sniff Time: Let them take the scenic route on their walk and enjoy all those important smells!

🧸 Enrichment: Puzzle toys, snuffle mats, training games, and interactive play can provide great mental stimulation.

💙 Quality Time: Sometimes the best way to spoil your dog is simply giving them your undivided attention, a cozy spot to nap, and plenty of belly rubs.

👑 And speaking of being spoiled…

Meet Maddie, the Social Media Manager’s dog—and, apparently, the undisputed Queen of the Neurology & Rehab building. 😂👑🐾

As you can see, Maddie takes her royal duties VERY seriously and clearly believes that cucumber eyes, flower petals, and a relaxing spa day are simply part of the job description.

All jokes aside, lol… she really is the queen around here and is VERY good at making sure everyone gets a little extra smile during the workday. 💙🐶

🐱🚨 HAPPY CATURDAY!🚨🐱

It’s Caturday—which means your cat has officially scheduled a full day of:

😴 Sleeping in a position that makes absolutely no sense
🍽️ Demanding food approximately 4.7 seconds after being fed
👀 Staring at you from across the room for no apparent reason
🧻 Destroying the toilet paper
💻 Sitting directly on the one thing you need
🚪 Demanding the door be opened… then immediately changing their mind
🧶 Attacking an invisible enemy at 2:13 AM
👑 And reminding you that YOU are simply staff.

Sound familiar? 😂

🐾 BUT HERE ARE SOME ACTUAL CAT FACTS!

🐱 Cats can sleep 12–16 hours a day—because apparently being adorable is exhausting.

🐾 A group of cats is called a clowder.
Personally, we think “a board meeting” is more appropriate.

👃 Cats have an excellent sense of smell and use scent to gather information about their environment.

🧠 Those fabulous whiskers aren't just for looks! They're highly sensitive sensory tools that help cats navigate and understand the spaces around them.

💧 Many cats prefer fresh, moving water—which may explain why the water bowl is ignored while the bathroom faucet is apparently a 5-star restaurant. 😂

😴 And yes, cats can dream during REM sleep. So if your cat twitches, wiggles their paws, or makes tiny noises while sleeping… they may be having an adventure in their dreams!

🚨 What to Expect When You Visit Our Emergency Room 🐾

When your pet needs emergency care, we know it can be stressful and overwhelming. Our goal is to provide excellent care while keeping you informed every step of the way.

Here’s what you can expect when you arrive at Westford Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center:

🐾 Every patient is triaged right away.
A veterinary nurse will assess your pet within 1–3 minutes of arrival to evaluate their condition, vital signs, and stability.

❤️ Patients are seen based on medical urgency—not arrival time.
Just like a human emergency room, the most critical patients are treated first. Pets with life-threatening conditions or STAT needs will be prioritized over stable patients.

⏳ Wait times can vary.
Typical ER wait times are around 2–6 hours, but they may be longer depending on:
• The number of critical emergencies
• Current hospitalized patients
• Staffing levels
• Time of day and day of the week

📅 Our busiest times are typically:
• Friday–Monday
• Evenings & weekends
• Holidays

If your pet’s condition allows, arriving earlier in the day may help reduce your wait.

🩺 Some procedures may be scheduled later in the day.
Non-emergency procedures such as certain ultrasounds or laceration repairs are often performed as time allows. Emergency cases always come first, so timing may change if critical patients arrive. Your care team will keep you updated.

📞 Call before you arrive whenever possible.
A quick phone call helps our team prepare for your pet’s arrival and begin the intake process.

💙 Thank you for your patience.
We know waiting while your pet is sick is difficult. A longer wait often means your pet has been assessed and is stable enough to safely wait while our team cares for pets with immediate life-threatening emergencies. Your pet is not forgotten—we will continue monitoring, providing updates, and making sure they receive the care they need.

• Triage emergencies with confidence
• Provide exceptional nursing care to hospitalized patients
• Assist doctors with emergency procedures
• Perform advanced skills including IV catheter placement, blood transfusions, urinary catheterization, venipuncture, lab diagnostics, anesthesia monitoring, CRIs, and patient monitoring
• Advocate for every patient
