๐Ÿ’ From Cherry Eye to Bright Eyes: Beckyโ€™s Successful Ophthalmology Journey! ๐Ÿ‘€โœจ

Meet Becky! โค๏ธ

When Becky developed a noticeable red swelling in the corner of her left eye, her family brought her to see Dr. Buechner and our ophthalmology team. She was diagnosed with "cherry eye," a condition caused by the displacement of an important tear-producing gland within the third eyelid. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๏ธโœจ

After a thorough eye examination, surgery was recommended to reposition the gland. Because the opposite eye was also at risk of developing the same problem, a preventive procedure was performed on that eye as well.

Using a highly successful technique called a Morgan Pocket with Abrams Modification, the gland is carefully tucked back into its natural location and reinforced with additional sutures to help keep it securely in place while healing. The goal is to preserve the gland, which plays an important role in producing tears and maintaining healthy eyes.

Becky's surgery went smoothly, and at her recheck appointment, both glands were exactly where they should be! ๐ŸŽ‰ Her eyes are healing beautifully, her temporary protective sutures were removed, and she's well on her way to a full recovery.

We're so happy to see Becky feeling great and looking bright-eyed again! ๐Ÿ’• Thank you to her family for trusting our team with her care.

โ˜€๏ธ Planning summer travel with your pet? Before you hit the road or head to the airport, make sure youโ€™re prepared for the unexpected.

Traveling can expose pets to heat, stress, motion sickness, injuries, and other medical concerns, especially during busy summer months. Taking time to plan ahead, pack medications, and know where to go in an emergency can help keep your pet safe and comfortable throughout your trip.

As May comes to a close, we want to continue spreading awareness about Lyme Disease and the importance of protecting our pets during tick season. ๐Ÿพ

With warmer weather comes increased tick activity, making prevention and early detection more important than ever. Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that can affect dogs of all ages and activity levels, especially those spending time outdoors.

โš ๏ธ Signs to watch for may include:
โ€ข Limping or shifting leg lameness
โ€ข Swollen or painful joints
โ€ข Fever or low energy
โ€ข Decreased appetite
โ€ข Swollen lymph nodes

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Ways to help protect your pet:
โœ”๏ธ Keep your pet on year-round flea & tick prevention
โœ”๏ธ Ask your veterinarian if the Lyme vaccine is right for your dog
โœ”๏ธ Perform daily tick checks after walks, hikes, or outdoor play
โœ”๏ธ Pay close attention to the ears, armpits, groin, and between the toes
โœ”๏ธ Remove ticks carefully with fine-tipped tweezers if found

If your pet is showing symptoms or you discover an attached tick and have concerns, contact your veterinarian promptly. Early treatment can make a significant difference.

At Westford Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center, weโ€™re here for your pets when they need us most. โค๏ธ
