Athena Doner was tumbling during cheer practice when it happened. She tore the ACL and medial meniscus in her right knee. Since then, she has had three surgeries on her knee. As a 16-year-old student at Strawberry Crest High School, being active with cheerleading and her friends is important to her. Her injury and subsequent surgeries made that difficult.

Based on previous experience at this location, and a solid recommendation from her orthopedic surgeon, Athena started at Select Physical Therapy at Plant City. Within the first 10 weeks of working with Physical Therapist Tim Gray, she was able to bend her knee, fully bear weight and discontinue wearing a brace.

“I was excited to work towards my goals,” she reflected. “(Tim), along with the entire staff, (was) always encouraging, supportive and made me feel motivated.”

While Athena is still working on getting stronger, she has come a long way. She has reached several goals and her confidence in the stability of her knee is growing. With every visit, she is closer to jumping, running and doing the things she loves without the burden of worrying.

“Although my recovery was challenging, my therapist made every visit something to look forward to,” she shared. “I felt cared for and my recovery process was a very positive one.”

Is there really an offseason anymore?

Between club sports, camps, showcases, private lessons and travel teams, many young athletes are competing year-round.

But even if competition never fully stops, recovery, strength development and injury management are timeless.

Here are the basics every athlete should do to set themselves up for success:

* Stay active without overloading. Rest doesn’t always mean stop all activity.
* Address old injuries now before they interrupt your season.
* Focus on the basics: strength, stability and agility.

Consult with one of our [Select Sports-Sports Medicine] physical therapists or your athletic trainer so you can stay healthy and perform your best, no matter what part of the season you’re in.

When Isaac Jimenez wasn't meeting milestones, his parents knew to seek out help. Before he started physical therapy, when he was lying down, he wouldn't get up on his own; he couldn't crawl or pull himself up.

At first, physical therapy was hard. It was difficult to make him do the exercises at home; Isaac would throw fits because he didn't know what he was doing. But soon enough, his family started to see progress.

For 16 months, visiting our Select Physical Therapy in partnership with UnityPoint Health Marshalltown location became part of their regular routine. Isaac was learning gross motor skills like going from sitting or lying to standing, and then after that, everything seemed to click for him.

"It was very amazing watching him grow and do things once he mastered the sit-to-stand," Lizette Jimenez, Isaac's mom, shared. "Once he learned, he became very independent."

With the help of the Marshalltown team, 2-year-old Isaac is on his way to running anywhere he wants! We are proud of him and thankful to his family for trusting us with his care.
