The BEST way to prevent divorce! Treat your marriage with the same respect and regular care that you do for your body, teeth, car, finances. Do a yearly marriage maintenance appointment!

Children who lose trust in a caregiver (via lies, inconsistency, addiction, abuse, mental health issues, personality disorders) become adults who struggle to get close in relationships. Once they take the risk to love and trust a romantic partner—only for that partner to betray them, disappoint them, or fail to be there for them in a big life moment—allowing trust and closeness back in is SUCH a tall task. Walls go up, and they see the other person as yet another loved one who can’t be relied on. Partners to people like this would be very smart to say, “I recognize how huge it is that you are doing this work and trying to forgive me and get close to me again. I know it’s so hard and I’m incredibly grateful.”

Do you think your partner is hyper-critical? Or instead do you think they never really say what’s on their mind? Then this difference could be at play. Both people are CARING; it’s just that one person is doing that by SHARING and the other is doing it by BEARING.

This is one of the best explanations about why the one who cheats is the one who should go to therapy. So often I work with people who are recovering from betrayal trauma; they want to understand why it happened, and their words include a lot of self-blame. Meanwhile, it’s so rare that someone reaches out for an appointment saying, “I betrayed my spouse. I know I’m justifying it to myself instead of actually figuring out what’s going on with me. Even if my spouse decides to divorce over this, I want to make sure I never do this to anyone again, and I know that starts and ends with me.”

PS: People pleasing can be a confusing term. It’s DOESN’T mean being kind, generous and selfless; it DOESN’T mean caring about how your actions affect others. “People pleasing” is best described as “avoiding conflict” and “being inauthentic.” It’s pretending to think or feel certain ways in order to avoid disagreement/disappointment/rejection. It’s also doing or being things for others that you aren’t actually doing with a genuine, pure heart; it’s doing things not out of genuine care or desire but as a covert method to be accepted/liked/approved.

This is just a friendly reminder that Pre-check and Global Entry are not just worth every penny, but they are also relationship-savers. They are preventative tools for travel stress/couples disagreements.

And relatedly, frustration over changes in rules and/or inconsistently applied rules is a sign of neurodivergence. If you found yourself screaming “Yes! Exactly!” as you watched this, that’s a sign that you experience frustration over changes in rules or inconsistently applied rules. 😉

Listen up, dudes: it’s actually this simple. Small gestures repeated often. Whatever she likes most, provide her with that thing or activity. (And crazy idea: if you don’t know what 3 things bring her the most joy… ask her! She’d be happy just being asked that!)

“We never fight” isn’t the flex people think it is. If there really is no conflict, it’s usually the case that one or both people isn’t being honest and open about their thoughts and feelings. Whenever you get two different human beings to be in an interdependent relationship, there is going to be conflict. Embrace conflict as a normal part of the whole deal AND ALSO have that conflict while remaining respectful and productive.
